Academics

Bowman School teaches Montessori Curriculum, IB (MYP), IB (DP) for students aged 0 to 18.

Curriculum

Bowman follows the Montessori method with a spiral approach to learning that stimulates critical thinking and curiosity. Learning is experiential, with students engaging their senses to explore the work and then drawing conclusions with guidance from teachers. The curriculum emphasizes interdisciplinary study, linking subjects through a global perspective. The world is studied in histories, cultures, languages, geography, and cooking projects focused on the continents of study for the year. As students grow, they deepen global studies to foster understanding and appreciation for other countries and cultures, building true global citizenship. Adolescents manage meaningful projects in six-week increments, and Bowman offers an accredited 12 weeks to 12th grade Montessori program, operating year-round.

Student Teacher Ratio

Bowman maintains a 10:1 student-to-teacher ratio. Multi-age classrooms support collaborative, age-appropriate learning.

Higher Education Progression

The school emphasizes preparing for life beyond Bowman so students can continue to thrive wherever they go after Bowman.
Wellbeing

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

Social-Emotional Learning is integrated through two simple rules: respect others and respect things; mediation and conflict resolution support peaceful classrooms; classrooms are interconnected communities that promote social growth; students develop caring, helpful, and empathetic relationships within both classroom and school communities.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Teachers develop a personal understanding of each student's unique learning needs and guide students in small, multi-age classrooms.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

The World Language curriculum includes Mandarin, Spanish, and Latin.

Mental Wellbeing

Wellness is an integrated part of daily life, including personal, physical, social and emotional, and community wellness. Healthy habits support development and academic success.
Parent Experience

History

Bowman School was founded in 1995 as Children's International School (CIS) by a group of concerned and entrepreneurial parents and educators. The founders sought to create a unique non-profit school with an individualized, self-directed academic program, to expand the concept of community and citizenship to a global level, to integrate state-of-the-art technology into the curriculum, to contribute to educational choice and innovation in schooling, and to support the work-life needs of families. In 2003 the school purchased its permanent home and changed its name to Bowman International School in honor of Margaret Bowman Ricks, the founding Head of School. Bowman has grown across multiple campuses and programs, including the 12 weeks–12th grade Montessori path, Bowman West (opened 2019), Bowman East revitalization (2021) and the launch of Grades 9–12 at Page Mill in 2023, with infant/toddler expansion planned for 2025. Bowman is a non-profit, non-denominational, co-educational institution.

Community

Bowman fosters a connected community through annual events for the whole family, including Fall Festival, All-School Ice Skating, All-School Dance, and an International Fair that celebrates cultures studied each year. Service learning and Hive Days engage students with their wider community, offering outside service or cultural activities and requiring 20 hours of service for 8th graders before graduation. Parents participate through the Bowman Community Association (BCA) to volunteer at community events.

Parent Teacher Association (PTA)

Bowman has a Bowman Community Association (BCA) that serves as a liaison for parents and volunteers at community events.
