Introduction

Maunula Primary School is a local municipal primary school serving grades 1–6 in Helsinki's Maunula district. It follows Helsinki's municipal curriculum with its own alignment to national criteria, educating around 600 pupils. The main instruction language is Finnish, and fully English-language instruction groups are available for all grades 1–6, admitted after a language test. Language study begins in Grade 1 with A1 options (English, French or Swedish); A2 languages start in Grade 3; a B1 language (Swedish or English) begins in Grade 6. In Grades 1–2, subjects are taught in an integrated way, with each class led by a lead teacher and supported by special education staff as needed. The school applies a Together pedagogy featuring co- and team-teaching to support all pupils, and includes two local SEN classes (an assisted SEN class and a linguistic-impairment class). In 2025–2026 it operates across two temporary sites—Paloheinäntie 40b (grades 1–3) and Mäkelänkatu 84 (3rd floor) for grades 4–6—before returning to renovated facilities planned for January 2028.

- There is no application fee for admission to Maunula Primary School for basic (comprehensive) education; applications and language-placement tests are not charged.

Tuition fees by year group (per term and per academic year)

- Grades 1–6 (primary / basic education): EUR 0 per term; EUR 0 per academic year. Basic education at municipal comprehensive schools is provided without recurring tuition charges. Textbooks and other required learning materials are provided to pupils at no charge.

After-school / optional activity fees (where applicable)

- After-school activities (intended primarily for pupils in grades 1–2 and pupils with an administrative decision on learning support) are charged monthly. The standard monthly fees are:
- EUR 100 per month for activities ending at 16:00.
- EUR 120 per month for activities ending at 17:00.
- The after-school activity fee includes a snack and accident insurance. Fee reductions (half fee) or exemptions are available based on household income; income limits and application procedures are set for the 2026–2027 period.

Billing schedule and payment terms

- After-school activities are billed by monthly invoice. The invoice is sent to the guardian whose credentials were used when applying or whose contact details were given on the paper form. Invoicing and customer-fee enquiries are handled by the City's financial administration and the after-school activities organiser named on the invoice.
- Monthly-fee exceptions and absence rules:
- Any activity days in June are free of charge.
- The fee for August is half of the normal monthly fee.
- The normal monthly fee is charged for school months that contain the autumn break, Christmas holiday and winter break (e.g., October, December, January and February remain billable months).
- After-school activities are charged a full month's fee even if the child attends only one day in the calendar month or starts mid-month.
- If a child is absent due to illness for 11 or more days in a calendar month, the fee for that month is half the normal monthly fee; if the child is absent for the entire calendar month because of illness, the fee is not charged at all.
- Late or unpaid invoices may be subject to interest according to applicable rules and may be forwarded to recovery proceedings if unpaid. Guardians who have applied for fee reduction but not yet received a decision may either pay and await a refund if approved, or request a postponement of the invoice due date from the organiser.

Boarding fees

- Boarding is not applicable to Maunula Primary School; the school operates as a day primary school and does not provide boarding facilities.

Other costs and optional charges

- Textbooks and required learning materials are provided free of charge to pupils. Pupils receive a free warm school meal on school days.
- Clubs and hobby activities organised by the school are often free (for example, free hobbies under the Finnish Hobby Model for certain age groups). Some club or hobby activities may be organised by external providers and may carry a reasonable participation fee; occasional voluntary trips or outsourced extracurricular activities may also incur separate charges communicated when offered. Guardians may apply for support or fee reductions for certain paid services under municipal arrangements.
- There is no mandatory school uniform cost for standard pupils at municipal comprehensive schools; optional personal supplies, voluntary activity equipment, private music lessons or privately organised extracurricular items may incur separate charges if used.

Refund and fee-reduction details

- Fee reductions and exemptions for after-school activities can be applied for annually (or for the spring term separately) and, if granted, are applied retroactively from the start of the current school term at the earliest; approved reductions result in refunds for overpaid amounts. The City publishes gross-income limits for exemption and halving of fees (effective 1 August 2026 for 2026–2027). Guardians must submit income documentation as required when applying for a reduction.
- Specific refund rules for short-term cancellations or organiser-specific paid services follow the organiser's terms; illness-related reductions for after-school fees follow the rules above (half or full waiver depending on the length of illness). Late-payment interest rules apply to unpaid invoices.

Fee payment options and contacts

- Payments for charged services are made via the monthly invoice system; the invoice will indicate the organiser and invoicing contact. After-school activities organised by the City of Helsinki are administered by the City's Financial Administration (Customer Services). For questions about invoices, postponing due dates or payment arrangements, contact the organiser named on the invoice or City Financial Administration: Financial Administration Services, tel. +358 9 310 25300, talpa.asiakaspalvelu@hel.fi. For fee-reduction applications and fee-decision enquiries, contact kasko.iphuojennukset@hel.fi (telephone service Mon–Fri 9:00–11:00).

- The school provides administrative contact details for guardians and manages admissions, language testing for English-language groups, and local arrangements as a municipal primary school.
