Introduction

Stenhus Gymnasium is an upper secondary school in Holbæk offering the IB Diploma Programme alongside a bespoke path for students aged 15 to 18. It is one of only 17 Danish schools authorized to offer the IB DP. STX (three years) and HF (two years) tracks complement the IB pathway, reflecting the school's history since 1906. In 2023 the boarding department closed, and Stenhus Housing now provides accommodation with around 80 rooms, typically 1–2 students per room, including meals, supervision, and Wi‑Fi. The campus sits in surroundings near the fjord and Knudsskoven, with athletic facilities: two handball halls, an indoor gym, a dance hall, a strength center, a running track, football and turf pitches, and a sports physiology center; it collaborates with Holbæk Sportsklinik for injury care. The school runs Holbæk Drama College and a Sports College, and offers language and cultural programs, including Mandarin and Chinese A-level, plus study trips.

History

Stenhus Gymnasium and its associated Kostskole have a long history dating back to 1906, when the school was established to serve local Holbæk boys and boarding students from privileged families. The oldest portion of the current campus lies in the nearby Kostskole building, where the first six students were graduated in 1912. In the 1970s the current Stenhus Gymnasium moved from the white building to a larger, single-story new building beside the Kostskole, and since 1983 the Kostskole and the gymnasium have been separate institutions, though they maintain close cooperation. In 2015, Stenhus Gymnasium inaugurated a museum wall to present 100 years of school history, and a companion book, Stenbidere, chronicled a century of life at Stenhus. In spring 2023 the boarding department was closed; Stenhus Gymnasium created Stenhus Housing, and the first students moved in August 2024.
