History

The American International School in Cyprus (AISC) began in 1987 when the school reopened with 51 students in Kindergarten through Grade 12. Esol Education purchased the school in 1993 and the name was changed to the American International School in Cyprus. From the start, AISC offered an American program of studies preparing students for universities in the United States and around the world. In 1994 the International Baccalaureate program was introduced to provide higher-level university preparation, with the first IB diplomas earned by graduates. AISC is accredited by MSA, the International Baccalaureate, the Council of International Schools, and the Cyprus Ministry of Education, and serves students from more than 32 countries.

Community

AISC embraces parent involvement; parents participate in activities such as reading stories, sharing cultural traditions, and fundraising for projects. The school supports a Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) made up of parent volunteers from all grade levels who provide feedback on programs and policy to support the school's mission. PASNET, the Parent and Student Network, designs events to build community spirit and runs initiatives such as the Room Parent Volunteer Program, the annual Halloween Event, the International Food Festival, and Healthy Living activities. There is an active alumni community. AISC communicates with families through multiple channels including Islander, ALMA, MANGEBAC, Hawk Feathers, and email.

Academic & Intellectual

The school offers a comprehensive American curriculum for KG4 through Grade 12 and an International Baccalaureate program in the last two years of secondary school. The Innovator, the student newspaper, provides opportunities to develop journalism skills by investigating, writing, editing, and publishing articles. The School Counselor supports university applications as part of the college-preparatory program.

Arts & Creative

Elementary and middle school students participate in arts-related after-school activities, including AISC Choir for Grades 3-5. Language Provision

The lingua franca and language of instruction is English; students are expected to speak English during instructional class time. In Elementary School, sheltered English classes are scheduled during the Greek as a Second Language block. Greek is taught as a second language and Greek may be offered as a foreign language for non-native speakers. In Middle School, foreign language instruction or Greek for native speakers is offered. English Language Learning (ELL) support is provided with assessments and targeted instruction for students requiring English language development.

Admissions

The school provides a Kindergarten to Grade 12 program offering both American College Preparatory and International Baccalaureate Diplomas. Admission is open to all students who can benefit from a challenging, culturally-embracing, international, university-preparatory, English-language education. The school serves approximately 400 registered students representing over 40 nationalities. For over 35 years, AISC has supported international and local families relocating to Cyprus and transferring to a new school.
