Families searching for Japanese-curriculum schools in the United States will find three broad models: full-time schools that follow Japan’s national (MEXT) curriculum, weekend or after-school “hoshuko” supplementary programmes that keep children aligned with grade level in Japan, and a small number of bilingual day schools that mix Japanese and English instruction. Instruction is typically Japanese-medium for core subjects in MEXT-aligned schools, with English taught as a subject or used more widely in bilingual programmes; hoshuko are usually taught in Japanese and meet outside the U.S. school day. Costs vary a lot by type and region - weekend supplementary schools commonly charge a few hundred dollars a month, while full-time Japanese day schools run into multiple thousands of dollars a year (examples of published fees fall in the low-to-mid five-figure range once bus and other fees are included). Admissions and the academic calendar often follow Japan’s April - March school year for MEXT-aligned programmes, seats can be limited in community hubs, and families planning a future return to Japan should prioritise MEXT recognition and curriculum continuity.
