The Music School of Volos was founded in 1997 and was among the first Music Schools in Greece, under the then-new law on the establishment of Music Schools. Although it started with a single class (A' Gymnasio) in its first year, the city quickly embraced and supported it. The school now educates more than 500 students and employs over 120 teachers. It operates on two educational pillars—general education and music education—and delivers cultural programs, implements innovative initiatives, and participates in activities with local bodies and associations. From the outset it has left a mark on the city's musical and cultural life, performing in Greece and abroad; its student concerts have always offered something distinctive and attracted broad audiences, and in recent years it has mounted major thematic concerts including tributes to Giannis Markopoulos, Mikis Theodorakis, Stavros Xarchakos, and the music and songs of fifteen Greek composers as made known and beloved through Giorgos Ntalaras's early performances in Smyrna and the Smyrna songs, as well as the enduring songs of Nikos Xylouris.

Community

The Music School of Volos hosts regular concerts and cultural programs across Volos, performed by its ensembles and choirs. On June 19, 2026, the Open Theatre Volos Melina Merkouri hosted 'Beyond Borders: The Journeys of Songs,' a concert by the Traditional Music Ensemble and the Choir of Traditional Song of the B' Gymnasium, with support from the Thessaly Region and the Metropolis of Dimitriados.
