Diving Deeper

Food Options

The school provides school meals (snack and lunch). Enrollment and withdrawal are managed via forms: guidance for enrolling in school meals for 2nd through 4th year students; a form to enroll for a school snack; a form to enroll for a school lunch; a form to withdraw from a school snack; and a SEPA consent with the catering provider Badovinac.

Governance and Ownership

The school is an educational establishment (vzgojno-izobraževalni zavod) Gimnazija Bežigrad, established by a founding decision.
Fees
Application fees

- Parents must submit an application form in June and pay a registration (application) fee at the time of application. The registration fee is non‑refundable.

Tuition fees (by year group / term)

- Gimnazija Bežigrad is a state secondary school (including its International School unit). Compulsory secondary education places in public schools are publicly funded and there is no published annual tuition charge for standard state‑funded places.

- The school does not publish per‑year or per‑term tuition amounts for the International School on its public information pages. No specific tuition schedule by year group or term is published.

Billing schedule and payment terms

- The registration fee is payable at the time the application is submitted in June and is non‑refundable.

- Textbooks supplied through the school textbook lending system are distributed in the last days before the start of term; a rental (loan) fee is charged at the time of issue (the school sets the fee, up to a maximum of one quarter of the book's purchase price). Compensation is charged if a returned textbook is excessively damaged. Students receiving state subsidy for meals may request (partial) exemption from the textbook rental fee.

- School meals (snack and/or lunch) are subscribed to before term starts (or via the school e‑Assistant during the year). Meal registrations and cancellations follow published deadlines; cancellations for illness or justified absence must be made by the stated cut‑offs. Prices for snacks and lunches are handled administratively and are not published on the school's public registration instructions.

- The school lists a transaction account number for payments (Št. trans. računa: 01100 - 6030694606) that is used for bank transfers. For dormitory billing (see Boarding), direct debit / SEPA recurring debit is offered by the student dormitory.

Boarding fees (if applicable)

- Gimnazija Bežigrad itself does not operate boarding as part of the school tuition; boarding for students is provided separately by the nearby student dormitory (Dijaški dom Bežigrad). The dormitory sets and publishes its own price list and billing rules.

- Dijaški dom Bežigrad gives a reference base monthly charge composed of accommodation plus food calculated for 22 working days per month; the stated base amount is EUR 275.50 for 22 working days (month). The dormitory accepts monthly billing and offers direct debit (SEPA) as a payment method. Any definitive boarding contract, availability and exact monthly charge are managed by the dormitory directly.

Other costs and routine fees

- Textbook rental: a lending fee up to 25% of purchase price is charged for loaned textbooks; workbooks for Slovenian and foreign languages are not included in the lending pool and must be provided by students. Damaged or excessively worn returns may incur compensation charges. Students with a state subsidy for meals may ask for partial exemption from the textbook rental fee.

- School meals: subscriptions for snacks and lunches are required for those who wish to use the service; registration, menu selection and cancellation are managed through the school's e‑Assistant (or specified registration periods). Meal pricing is administrative and not published in the school's registration instructions. Cancellation windows and procedures are specified for temporary and final cancellations.

- Extracurricular activities, project days, field trips and subject‑related excursions may carry separate charges; specific amounts and billing procedures for such activities are set on a per‑activity basis and are not published as a standing school fee schedule.

- Uniform: no school uniform requirement or uniform fee is published for Gimnazija Bežigrad on the school's public pages.

Refund information

- The registration (application) fee is explicitly non‑refundable.

- Textbook lending: refunds are not described, but compensation is required for excessively damaged returned books and partial exemptions from rental fees are available for students with state meal subsidies.

- School meals: procedures for temporary and final cancellation are published; any refunds or billing adjustments for cancelled meals follow the published meal‑service cancellation rules and administrative practice.

Fee payment options

- Bank transfer to the school transaction account is listed (Št. trans. računa: 01100 - 6030694606).

- Meal subscriptions and related administration are managed electronically through the school's e‑Assistant (electronic system used for registration, selection and cancellation).

- For boarding at Dijaški dom Bežigrad, direct debit (SEPA recurring debit) is available and explicitly described as a payment option; the dormitory issues monthly bills.

Summary of findings and remaining gaps (concise):

- The school publishes policies (requirement to pay a non‑refundable registration fee at application; textbook lending rental rules; meal subscription procedures) and provides an account number for transfers, but it does not publish specific monetary amounts for the registration/application fee, per‑year or per‑term tuition for the International School, or meal prices on its public information pages. Where boarding applies, the nearby student dormitory publishes a base monthly charge (EUR 275.50 for 22 working days). The material above lists all fees and procedures explicitly published; explicit amounts for registration, tuition and meals were not published.

Parent Experience

History

Bežigrad Gymnasium began in 1908 as the German Gymnasium with predominantly German-speaking teachers and Slovenian as an elective language. After the German school closed in 1918, it was renamed Realno gimnazija with Slovenian as the language of instruction in 1922. A new building in Bežigrad, designed by architect Emil Navinšek, opened in 1936 as enrollment grew and was noted as the world's first corridor-free school building. In 1940 the institution was split into IV. državno realno gimnazijo and the remaining III. gimnazijo. After World War II the school modernized, adopting eight-year schooling; in 1982 it became Srednja naravoslovna šola, and in 1990 it was renamed Gimnazija Bežigrad and began offering the International Baccalaureate program under UNESCO and the UN; the International School was established two years later, with an annex opening in 1991 and a new sports complex in 1995.

Community

Bežigrad Gymnasium runs a broad program of activities including Project Days, clubs and interest activities, trips and professional excursions, and international exchanges. It supports research activities and work with gifted students, with opportunities to present research summaries and notable achievements at the international level. The Bežigrad community also emphasizes student life through events and performances, and maintains a School Chronicle documenting activities.

Parent Teacher Association (PTA)

A Parents' Council is formed to represent parents for organized involvement at Bežigrad Gymnasium and the International School, with one representative from each department elected by parents at the annual parent meeting and a deputy may be elected. Bežigrad Gymnasium's Parents' Council elects two representatives, while the International School's Parents' Council elects one representative. A parent of a student enrolled in the school program may be elected to the Council. The term of office ends when the child leaves the school; a member may resign or be replaced. The Council proposes extra programs, gives consent to proposals for extra services, and participates in developing the development plan, educational plan, school rules, and the annual work plan. It also participates in the process of appointing the principal and expresses opinions on candidates; it handles parent complaints and elects parent representatives to the school council and other bodies. It can adopt a program of cooperation with the school and, in agreement with school leadership, form working groups and undertake other duties as provided by law; its working methods can be set out in the Council's bylaws.

Admissions

Admissions

For the 2026/27 academic year, Gimnazija Bežigrad offers the following first-year options: a standard gymnasium track plus a sports gymnasium track, including the departments of initial German, initial Spanish, continuing German, mixed German with initial German and initial Spanish, mixed French with initial and continuing French, and a mixed mathematics department with initial German alongside a general department with initial German. Students in mixed tracks are grouped by their second foreign language, and in the mathematics track grouping is by mathematics. Applications for 2026/27 must be submitted by April 2, 2026. If submitting a hard copy, the application is handed to the student's current school, which forwards it to the chosen high schools by the deadline. From 2026/27, electronic applications are possible via the government portal for education, and information on application status is available on Gimnazija Bežigrad's site. Applicants may transfer their application to another secondary school no later than May 6, 2026. Sport-track applicants must be registered athletes and must submit by March 4, 2026: a medical certificate, a certificate from the national sports federation detailing recent results, and a coach's statement of collaboration with the school's sports coordinator. All forms are available through government portals, and a point calculator for NPZ (national testing) is provided online. If enrollment is restricted, the school will inform candidates about details of any selective procedure by June 5, 2026. In the first admission round, 90% of places are allocated based on the stated criteria: the sum of final grades from 7th–9th grade up to 60% of the total score, and NPZ results in language and mathematics each accounting for up to 20%. For the sports track, 10 points are added for an ‘A' sport status and 5 points for a ‘B' status. If there are ties at the threshold, tie-breaking uses NPZ scores in language and mathematics, and if still tied, NPZ results from Slovenian. If enrollment is restricted, 90% of seats are filled in the first round and candidates are informed by June 19, 2026. In the second round, candidates not admitted in the first round may apply for remaining seats at all secondary schools with enrollment restrictions (including Gimnazija Bežigrad), ranking up to ten schools by preference; the final placement decision is communicated by June 29, 2026, and admitted students enroll the next day.
