Parent Experience

History

In 1973, at the request of Moscow's Italian community, the Italian ambassador Pietro Vichi opened the school on the Villa Berg site where the Italian embassy is located, naming it after his wife Constanza Vichi. The primary and secondary schools were certified by the Italian Ministry of Education in 1987; the classes were small, with about 20 students, and the school gradually grew to welcome non-Italian students. In 1989, due to increasing enrollment, the school moved to larger premises on Lobachevsky Street 38, and three years later the kindergarten at the school received Italian state accreditation. In 2000 the school moved to the UPDK building in central Moscow at Leninsky Prospekt 78A; Italy passed a law recognizing the equality of private and public schools, and in 2003 the institution began licensing under the new standards. In 2006 the administration renamed the school Italo Calvino; in 2009 a four-year linguistic lyceum opened, also licensed by the Italian Ministry of Education (Ministerial Decree No. 2792, February 17, 2017). In 2020 the school established ongoing cooperation with the Dante Alighieri Society, and in 2023 the school celebrated 50 years and continues the founders' work.

Community

Italo Calvino is the only Italian general-education school in Russia, delivering an Italian-language international education. The program is approved by the Italian Ministry of Education and is recognized by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs as part of the Italian education system abroad. It belongs to the ADASIM network of Dante Alighieri-supported Italian schools. The school runs community projects and events, including Bridges from Words Moscow-Tbilisi, a Moscow city summer camp, and regular open-house days with Italian authorities.
Facilities

Academic Facilities

LOCUSBAMBINI is the developmental program with an original methodology that includes subject-based and plot-based activities, thematic orientation, and creative projects. Children study more than 45 topics during the year, exploring the world around them from many different and fascinating perspectives. Creative projects are a form of activity that allows a child to reveal their natural potential, talents and special abilities. Through cooperative activities, children learn to communicate, make friends, share, help others, exchange ideas, celebrate successes, set and achieve goals, and receive recognition. The program uses three languages of communication. In Asilo and Bambini groups, Russian-speaking educators teach with Italian and English lessons conducted by native speakers; International communication is in Italian, with English as the second language; teachers and caregivers are native speakers. The LOCUSBAMBINI team comprises specialists with higher education and experience working with preschool-age children; specialists who are native speakers of Italian and English contribute to children's development. They share cultural codes and transmit the traditions and values of the international community. LOCUSBAMBINI uses three languages of communication. Children interact with ease, grow, and develop without language or cultural barriers.

Extra Curricular Facilities

Additional directions of development include speech-language pathology/defectology, psychologist, painting, musical development (piano) and solfège. Five development directions guide learning: social-communicative, cognitive, linguistic, artistic-aesthetic, and physical. Italian and English are taught by native speakers, and three languages of communication are used in the program.

Arts & Creative

Creative projects enable children to reveal their talents through collaborative work. The program includes artistic and aesthetic development, painting, and other visual arts. Music education is part of the program, with piano study and solfège.

Cultural & Language

Italian language instruction is central to the program. Italian and English are taught by native-speaking educators; Russian-speaking staff support younger groups. In the International group, communication with children occurs in Italian, with English as the second language; three languages of communication are used in the program.

Social & Hobbies

Social and communicative development is built into daily activities and creative projects. Children learn to communicate, make friends, share, help, and collaborate to reach goals. The program emphasizes teamwork, empathy, and collaborative play across languages.

Lifestyle & Wellbeing

Hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30 to 16:45. The day includes a balanced four-meal regime (breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack, dinner), outdoor walks twice daily, and daytime sleep. Adaptation to the kindergarten is gradual and supported by parents, with access to parental consultations and a school psychologist. Two attendance formats are offered: 8:00/9:00 to 12:00/13:00 and 8:00 to 19:00.
Languages

Language Provision

Italian is the main language of instruction; lessons are conducted in Italian with support for bilingual learners in the early years. English is studied as a second foreign language with emphasis on conversational practice. A second foreign language is Russian or Spanish (about three hours per week); a third language such as German can be added in the linguistic lyceum. The four-year linguistic lyceum graduates with Italian and English not lower than level B2-C1, and Spanish, as well as German or Russian at level B1.

Bilingual Teaching

Italian is the primary language of instruction; subjects are taught in Italian, with support for bilingual learners in the early years. In the kindergarten, a play-based approach helps children absorb Italian, develop communication skills, and support physical and psychological development. The learning environment emphasizes daily immersion in a 'little Italy' and integration into an international school community.
