Wellbeing

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

The school has Schulsozialarbeit (school social work) as part of the school's life. The Kindergarten Konzeption describes collaboration with the Grundschule's Schulsozialarbeit to support transitions, based on shared cooperation agreements. Goals include a smooth transition from kindergarten to primary school and mutual familiarity among staff and families. The joint project “Fit for the DSM” runs with the Schulsozialarbeit and includes activities such as parent evenings, parent circles, and activities for children to prepare for school entry.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Remedial instruction (Förderunterricht) is offered. In primary school, participation in Förderunterricht occurs on the proposal of the class teacher or subject teacher, and guardians' consent makes it binding for a school term. In Grundschule, decisions about the binding participation are made by class teachers in consultation with the school administration. Language support is provided through Sprachwerkstätten and Sprachkompetenztraining (SKT) as part of Förderunterricht and differentiated instruction. Intensive language support for 5–6-year-olds is provided in the Kindergarten to help Deutschkompetenz before entering primary school.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

English is taught as a foreign language. In the Grundschule, English is offered in grades 3 and 4 with two weekly periods.

Mental Wellbeing

Mental wellbeing is supported by Schulsozialarbeit (school social work) as part of the DSM's welfare provision. The school coordinates across Kindergarten and Grundschule on transitions and welfare-related activities, including the cross-setting project Fit for the DSM and family involvement to support wellbeing during school entry.

Safeguarding

Campus safety and safeguarding are governed by access controls: all people enter via the main entrance and turnstiles, with specified exceptions. The rules outline entry and exit times and conditions (e.g., 7:15–9:00, 14:00–15:00, and other periods), and require prior notification for access during the day. Access cards are to be used as directed and sharing cards is prohibited.
Parent Experience

History

The Deutsche Schule Moskau is the German Embassy School in Moscow and has borne the name Friedrich Joseph Haass since the mid-1990s. Its roots go back to the early 18th century when Evangelical pastor Glück founded the first German school in Moscow as a gymnasium, and German schools continued to operate in Moscow through the following centuries. After World War II, two embassy-affiliated German schools operated in Moscow: a small West German school with under 100 students in the early 1960s and a larger East German school in Nemgorodok, which served up to about 550 students. The West German school operated under the Deutscher Schul- und Kindergarten-Verein Moskau, and after German reunification the Federal Republic of Germany took over the Nemgorodok buildings and the school. The school and kindergarten sit on grounds belonging to the German Embassy and are governed under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

Community

The school community is organized around active participation by students and parents, with the Student Council (SV) and the Parents' Association (Elternbeirat) playing leadership roles. The SV represents student wishes in school bodies and runs projects such as School design, Winter and Spring Ball, Sek I Party, Clocks in the outdoor area, and Students helping students. The Elternbeirat represents all DSM parents, is democratically elected, and engages in regular communication with the school; it supports school life with initiatives such as the social project Nastenka, a Welcome-AG for newly arrived families, and events like Halloween parties and the Summer Festival. The DSM also hosts cultural activities such as a choir TonArt and a student newspaper DSMAktuell, enriching the community life.

Parent Teacher Association (PTA)

The Elternbeirat (EBR) represents the parents of all DSM students and is democratically elected by parent representatives from every class. It aims to create an optimal learning environment, promote a strong school community, and relay parent ideas and concerns to the school leadership; it emphasizes open, respectful, and factual communication and positions itself as a partner and mediator for the entire school. The EBR runs projects and events, including the social project Nastenka, a Welcome-AG for newcomers, Halloween parties, and the Summer Festival. The goal is to foster trust between the school leadership, teachers, and parents and to improve mutual understanding; input is welcomed. The EBR team for 2025/2026 includes Sven Flasshoff, Alexander Mikosch, and Sebastian Linke, and downloads include a Handout for Parents and the Elternbeiratsordnung (EBR rules).
