Introduction

Haugesund International School is an English-language IB World School on the island of Karmøy in Norway. It serves students aged 6 to 16 with the Primary Years Programme (PYP) for Grades 1–5 and the Middle Years Programme (MYP) for Grades 6–10. The school operates as a non-profit foundation and began in Haugesund in 2016 before moving to Torvastad in 2019. The 2023 campus expansion added a dedicated Middle Years building, a School Kitchen, Library, Science Lab and Art Room, while the original 1975 building now houses the PYP. The campus sits between farmland and the sea and includes a playground, ballcourt and outdoor spaces alongside modern indoor arenas for sports. The language of instruction is English, with Norwegian and Spanish offered as additional languages. The school emphasizes enrichment activities—music, poetry, architecture, mindfulness, knitting, chess and podcast creation—and hosts science fairs, cultural celebrations and student-led initiatives to foster inquiry and discovery.

Admissions

Admissions

1. Eligibility and programs: Haugesund International School provides an IB-accredited English and Norwegian education for students in Grades 1–10 (ages 6–16), offering the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the Middle Years Programme (MYP). The school aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people in a supportive, multi-cultural environment. English and Norwegian are used as languages of instruction to support a diverse student body.
2. Capacity and wait lists: The school is approved through the Directorate of Education for 190 students, and enrollment is near capacity. As a result, many classes currently have waiting lists. Space allocations follow priority criteria when applications exceed capacity.
3. Applications and timing: Applications for students aged 6–16 are welcomed year-round with a rolling admissions process. Re-enrollment for the following academic year should be submitted by the end of February, while first-time applications are preferred by March 30. New enrollments take place from August to September 30.
4. Admission decisions and appeals: The admission decision is an individual decision under the Public Administrative Act. If a family disagrees with the decision, they may appeal to the Regional Governor within three weeks; the appeal must be sent via Haugesund International School. The process follows the Public Administrative Act.
5. Priority criteria: When applications exceed capacity, priority is given to international students or students who do not have Norwegian as their mother tongue; followed by siblings of students already registered, children of permanently employed HIS staff, and students returning to Norway after attending school abroad. Other candidates will be considered as capacity allows. If applicants are equal on the listed criteria, the date of application determines priority.
6. Enrollment cap and class size: Total enrollment is governed by the Directorate of Education's overall approval for 190 students. The school aims for maximum class sizes of about 18 students in PYP and 20 students in MYP.

Waitlist

Waitlists exist due to near-full capacity; the school has an approved capacity of 190 students and many classes have waiting lists. Applications are accepted year-round with rolling admissions, and spaces are allocated according to capacity and the priority criteria.
