Parent Experience

History

The site began life as an American Naval Hospital in 1943 (U.S. Naval Mobile Hospital Number 6), built by Fletcher Construction. The Education Department planned a secondary school on the site, with permanent elements designed so the wards, gym, and hall could be converted into a school after the war. Avondale Technical High School opened in February 1945 with about 550 students and 21 teachers, and was renamed Avondale College in 1948. Since 1945 six principals have extended and rebuilt the campus, including after a devastating fire in 1990, and the school has developed international exchange links. In 2025 Avondale College celebrated its 80th Jubilee and planned a Time Capsule for the 100th Jubilee in 2045.

The school has top-quality, award-winning facilities. The school has a modern environment created by a multi-million-dollar rebuild that features innovative, sustainable design and the latest technology. The school has the Early Childhood Education Centre on campus, opened in 1996 as a purpose-built, community-based centre. Admissions

1. In-zone enrolment for 2027. All students who live within the Avondale College zone are eligible to apply to attend. Enrolment is by the parent or legal guardian. In-zone applications are now open and due by 6 August 2026; interviews will be held 18–20 August. Online enrolment must be completed in one session with all required documents uploaded. The documents include birth certificate, latest school report, proof of address (electricity bill dated within 1–2 months preferred; or council rates statement or tenancy agreement); if not born in New Zealand, proof of citizenship/residence (passport and/or visa) and student visa; if refugee, proof of refugee status; if living with a guardian or caregiver, evidence of guardianship/caregiver status. Original documents should be brought to the enrolment interview.

2. Out-of-zone – NOW CLOSED. Out-of-zone applications closed at 4pm on 2 September 2026. We are not taking any out-of-zone students for the current year.
