History
Founded in 1950, The American School of Tangier has provided an American-based educational program since its inception. It moved from a small house in Marshan to larger buildings downtown, and was later purpose-built at its present Iberia location across from the Spanish Consulate. The 15-acre campus blends historic and modern facilities, forming an oasis in Tangier and Morocco. Originally conceived for expatriate children, by the 1970s AST's families were mostly Moroccan, while the school maintained connections with European and American luminaries. USAID-ASHA funded projects in recent years expanded learning spaces, improved facilities, and AST celebrated its 75th anniversary in June 2025.

Community
APA, AST's Booster Club, fosters community and parent involvement by organizing a range of events and programs. The organization coordinates activities such as Book Week, International Fairs, Career Fairs, Science Fairs, Sports Days, and Bake Sales, and creates orientation programs for new families.
