History

The school was established in 1998 as the heir to three Portuguese-language educational institutions: the Official Primary School, the Commercial School, and the Liceu de Macau. The Fundação Escola Portuguesa de Macau was created by Decree-Law 89-B/98 on 9 April 1998, through the collaboration of the Portuguese State, Fundação Oriente, and the Associação Promotora da Instrução dos Macaenses. The foundation is a private-law, public-utility institution responsible for ensuring the operation and development of a Portuguese School in Macau. The first stone was laid on 18 April 1998 in a ceremony presided by the then-Prime Minister António Guterres, with attendance by the Education Minister Marçal Grilo, the Governor of Macau Vasco Rocha Vieira, and the President of FEPM Roberto Carneiro. The school received authorization from the Macau Education and Youth Services Directorate on 21 August 1998 and is part of Macau's education system as a private nonprofit institution under Decree-Law 38/93/M.
