History

The Riga State Gymnasium No. 2 building was constructed from 1876 to 1879, based on architect Johann Daniel Felzko's project. The building has the status of a state architectural monument. It was planned as a freestanding three‑story brick structure beside Riga's canal, with decorative side wings and sculptural figures. In 1899–1900, extensions were added, creating space for the director's apartment, additional classrooms, a hall for Latvian students' morning prayers, a chancery, and a library; the lower floor housed an assembly hall, the second floor a prayer room for Orthodox students, and the third floor additional classrooms, a Russian library, a physics cabinet, and a drawing room; a basement gym was also part of the complex. Renovation from late 2007 to 2009 included a full reconstruction from foundations to roof, the installation of an elevator for accessibility, new spaces, and basement expansions (including a canteen); the historic wrought‑iron fence around the school was restored. The gymnasium traces its existence to 1916, celebrated its centennial in 2016, and will observe its 110th anniversary in 2026.

Community

The school participates in international exchanges under the Erasmus+ programme and hosted Belgium and Italy student delegations in March 2026. Humanities students in grade 10 staged a Medea production in April 2026 as part of annual theatre work. Regular school events include graduations for 9th and 12th grades and active student council activities, with updates shared on the school's blog and student pages. The Diploma Programme is offered as an integrated IBDP in grades 10–12 in Latvian and English, with accreditation since 2014, broadening study opportunities abroad.

Parent Teacher Association (PTA)

The Gimnazijas padome (Gymnasium Council) is a collegial body that operates as part of the school and includes the principal, teachers, and parent and student representatives; the majority of its members are parents and students. Its charter defines its aims to support school development, participate in educational planning and quality, and advise on student rights and duties, organizational matters, budget allocations, and curriculum implementation. The council's structure includes a president, a deputy, and a protocolist, with additional representation by a Riga City Education, Culture and Sports Department delegate when present. Members are elected from classes (parents of 7th–9th and 10th–12th grades) and from the student council, and teachers cannot serve as parent reps. The council can form parent interest groups, conducts meetings at least twice per school year, and uses multiple channels to inform students, parents, and staff about its decisions.
