Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

DIS focuses on the development of the whole child as a caring, open-minded, and life-long learner. It fosters international mindedness within a multi-lingual school community. The IB PYP emphasizes knowledge, concepts, skills, attitudes, and action to support lifelong learning and personal growth. It emphasizes empathy, social responsibility, and community service to develop well-rounded individuals. The overall aim is to develop well-rounded, confident, and responsible individuals who aspire to reach their full potential.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

DIS upholds inclusion and a balanced education rooted in inclusive values. The school endeavors to accommodate learners with diverse needs and celebrate their strengths. English as an Additional Language (EAL)

English is the language of instruction in all grades. All DIS teachers are trained to support language acquisition and learning by non-native English speakers. English as an Additional Language (EAL) teachers and Lao native speakers who also speak English provide additional support and instruction. The school does not offer a separate ESL track within its academic program. Admissions reviews consider the student's ability to access the curriculum in English, with staff providing language support to help students thrive in the English-language learning environment.

Mental Wellbeing

Grade placement is based on social, emotional, and academic well-being to ensure an appropriate learning environment. During admissions, social and emotional development is reviewed, and learning support staff may be involved in the process. The school emphasizes development of the whole child and aims to support students' social and emotional growth within its IB framework.

Safeguarding

To ensure the safety of students, only authorized persons may pick up a child; an ID is required to enter the campus, and changes to authorization must be notified in writing in advance. If authorization changes, parents must communicate in writing. Translators are available to assist Lao parents during meetings if English is not comfortable. These procedures are outlined as part of the school's admissions and safety practices.

Enrollment steps
01. Visit our School. Diamond International School serves the educational needs of the national and international community in Vientiane, Laos. It welcomes children of all nationalities whose families are committed to an international educational curriculum in the philosophy and methodology of an inquiry-based approach to learning in English. English is the language of instruction in all grades, with English Language Acquisition support for non-native speakers. Please schedule a tour at your convenience.
02. Fill out an Application. To begin the admissions process, applicants complete an application. The application requires the submission of school records and confidential recommendations, and payment of the application fee.
03. Interview with Principal/teacher. Early Years Program involves a brief play session/interview with parents (preferably both). Elementary applicants for Grades 1–5 require a brief formal interview, and families are encouraged to visit the school and meet the elementary principal. In reviewing eligibility, the school looks at current/prior school records and confidential recommendations, and may invite applicants to attend school on a trial basis to assess access to the curriculum.
04. Admission. Admissions decisions are made by the Principal after review by admissions staff and other school personnel. For overseas applicants, decisions are usually issued within a week after application completion and payment; for applicants residing in Vientiane, decisions are usually announced within a day or two. If offered admission, an invoice for a one-time, non-refundable registration fee is issued and the applicant will receive a link to the online enrollment portal. Enrollment and payment of the registration fee are due within 30 days of the invoice or two days before the student's first day of attendance, whichever comes first. This enables place-holding for accepted applicants and allows waitlisted candidates to be offered spaces as they become available.

Waitlist

Wait Lists: When the number of eligible applicants exceeds the availability of spaces for a particular grade, students may be placed on a wait list. Siblings already enrolled at DIS are given priority within the wait list, as are children of DIS staff. Other criteria include whether the student has other viable educational options, their level of English, and general academic proficiency. When placing a candidate on a wait list, a realistic assessment of chances and timing is provided, and families are periodically contacted to update enrollment status and confirm whether they wish to remain on the waitlist.
