Admissions

Admissions

1. Policy and eligibility. The New American School provides a safe, nurturing environment with equal opportunity to learn. It admits students who will benefit from enrollment and does not discriminate on race, color, religion, or national origin; qualified applicants are considered for admission. The school reserves the right to admit or deny applicants based on an assessment of the student's needs and NAS's ability to meet them.

2. Grade-level placement and entrance assessments. All prospective students must take an entrance examination to determine placement. Placement is based on the student's previous records, an oral interview, a writing sample, and an assessment conducted by NAS, with successful candidates achieving appropriate grade-level scores.
Kindergarten placement is based on age appropriateness, a developmental checklist, and an interview with the parents and child; toilet training is required and no prior knowledge of English or German is needed. Elementary placement uses the NAS composite test score; students cannot be more than one grade level below the target grade; a writing sample is required for Grades 2–5. Middle School placement uses the NAS composite test score and cannot be more than two grade levels below the target grade; a writing sample is required. High School placement uses the NAS composite test score and cannot be more than two grade levels below the target grade; a writing sample is required; grade placements also consider the number of credits NAS accepts from previous schools. A minimum level of German proficiency is required or the student must sign an agreement to take extra German language courses externally to meet course requirements. NAS will not admit 12th-grade students unless they attended an American Curriculum school prior to enrolling and can fulfill all graduation requirements. All potential students from Grade 2 upward must submit a certified and sealed Academic and Behavior Report from their previous school. NAS reserves the right to accept or deny applicants based on NAS's assessment of the student's needs and NAS's ability to meet them.
