Introduction

MNÁMK Baja, the Hungarian-German Education Centre Baja, is a German Auslandsschule located at 6500 Baja, Duna utca 33, Hungary. It runs a bilingual German-national education system, with a 1–8 general-education primary, a 7–12 Gymnasium, and a 9–13 bilingual German‑Hungarian tagozat or a 9–14 language-focused national gymnasium. The German‑Hungarian tagozat provides a double diploma: the German International Abitur and the Hungarian Hochschulreife, allowing university study in Germany or Hungary. German-language preparatory classes (about 20 weekly hours) help students reach German proficiency; English is taught to a high level. MNÁMK Baja is part of a network of roughly 140 foreign German schools, and classes in lower and upper grades are led by two teachers. The campus includes a dormitory for 203 residents, a library, an on-site gym and outdoor sports grounds, a canteen, and digital-equipped classrooms with access to musical instruments. The school also hosts concerts, exhibitions, and intercultural programs that highlight the German minority culture.

Diving Deeper

Boarding Arrangements

The dormitory is well equipped, with a capacity of 203 places. Rooms are four-bedded, and each has its own bathroom.

Food Options

Meals are ordered and cancelled exclusively through the E-Menza system.

House System

Students are divided into eight study groups. These groups are age-heterogeneous to promote community building and socialization, and are led by a group leader teacher. Students have access to laptops, bicycles, musical instruments, sports facilities, a gym, and a library.

Governance and Ownership

The dormitory is an independent institutional unit of MNÁMK. MNÁMK is administered and operated by the MNÁMK Public Foundation (MNÁMK Intézményfenntartó és Működtető Közalapítvány).
Fees
Application fees

- The school does not charge an application fee or tuition for students. The institution does not collect tuition from learners; only meal (catering) charges are collected where applicable.

Tuition fees (by year group / per term / per year)

- For all year groups (kindergarten, primary, lower secondary, upper secondary, vocational/technical years) there is no tuition charged — per term and per year the tuition fee is zero.

- There are no published mandatory school fees per term or per year for any year group beyond catering/meal charges. Meal charges apply where the student uses the school canteen or boarding meals; the amount is calculated from the daily meals actually ordered and is billed on a monthly basis (see Billing schedule below).

Billing schedule and payment terms

- Meal (térítési) charges are billed monthly. The school's meal-ordering system generates a payment request (díjbekérő) and the amount for the relevant month must be paid by the 15th of that month. After payment the system automatically issues an invoice.

- Meal charges are calculated for the actual teaching days in the month and for the individual meals ordered by the pupil. Overpayments resulting from cancellations or absences are reconciled on the following month's bill (the system automatically deducts prior overpayments). Cancellation of a meal for absence must be made by 09:00 on the previous day to be effective from the following day.

Boarding (kollégium) fees

- The collégium requires payment for meals taken by boarders; the collégium's internal rules show the collégium's bank account for fee payments but do not publish a separate, fixed boarding accommodation (room) price in the publicly posted regulations. The published rules state that the collégium charges for the meals the boarder consumes and that any entitlement to discounts or exemptions is handled by the institution and the economic office. The collégium's bank account for transfers is listed for fee payments.

- Where a separate accommodation (lodging) or accommodation service fee would apply, no specific fixed amount for boarding accommodation is published in the available institutional regulations; meal (catering) charges are the clearly stated recurring charge for collégium residents.

Other costs and optional fees (uniform, textbooks, extracurriculars, trips)

- No compulsory uniform fee is published in the institution's regulations. Families should expect to cover routine school supplies and any textbooks or course-specific materials not provided free of charge; the school's documents reference textbook handling and state-supported arrangements for textbook supply in applicable cases.

- Optional adult/continuing education or extra language courses run by the institution have participation fees when offered (example published course rates appear in earlier course notices). These optional course fees are separate from day-to-day schooling and catering charges.

- Field trips, exchange programmes, examination fees (when externally set) or voluntary activities may carry separate charges as determined for each activity; such activity-specific charges are published or communicated locally when the activity is organised.

Refunds and cancellations

- Overpayments or credits from cancelled meals are carried forward and applied against the following month's invoice; reconciliation of overpayments is handled automatically by the meal-ordering system. Cancellation of ordered meals must be made by 09:00 on the preceding day to avoid being charged for the next day's meal.

- For collégium fee arrears the rules state that persistent non-payment may lead to termination of the collégium relationship after formal notice; any enforcement or refund arrangements are administered through the school's economic office and collégium administration.

Fee payment options and practical payment details

- Payment methods accepted for meal and collégium-related charges: cash at the school cashier on scheduled days, bank transfer to the institution's account, and direct debit (inkasszó). The meal-ordering system (eMenza / e-menza) is used to place and cancel meal orders and to view payment requests; the system issues the payment request that must be settled by the 15th of the relevant month.

- The collégium publishes a bank account number for transfers. Parents who wish to use direct debit can request the inkasszó form from the school's economic office. Cash payments are accepted in the school's cashier on the dates announced by the economic office.

Summary (practical points for parents)

- There is no application fee and no tuition charged for any year group; the main recurring fee families will encounter is for meals (daily catering) and any optional paid courses or activity-specific charges. Meal billing is monthly, payable by the 15th, and paid by cash, bank transfer, or direct debit via the school's eMenza process. Overpayments are offset against the next month's bill; cancellations must be made by 09:00 the prior day. For collégium residents the documented recurring charge in the public rules is the meal fee; no separate published boarding-room price is given in the publicly posted collégium regulations.

Wellbeing

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

Hungarian and German-native teachers teach, with biology, chemistry, and Hungarian language and literature as exceptions. Students study German and Hungarian, and English up to B2/C1 levels. The same curriculum, the same teachers, and joint projects and celebrations integrate two cultures into daily school life. The campus operates across the full spectrum from kindergarten to high school and technical education, with a dormitory. Graduates earn both German international Abitur and a Hungarian diploma, aligning with higher education opportunities in Germany, Hungary, or English-language universities.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

English is taught to B2/C1 level at MNÁMK. The curriculum prepares students for higher education in Germany, Hungary, or English-language universities.
Parent Experience

History

MNÁMK Baja has been maintained and operated by MNÁMK Intézményfenntartó és Működtető Közalapítvány since 1998. In September 1990 we took possession of the high school's new, spacious building, and by 1995 the institution expanded with the sports hall, the dormitory, the general school and kindergarten buildings. Since 1998 the institution has operated as a foundation school. From 2000, with the introduction of a new track, the high school was expanded with a new 16-classroom annex. The complex was built with substantial contributions from Baja City, the county government, the Office of the German Minority, and the Government of Hungary, as well as from the Federal Republic of Germany, the Hermann Niermann Foundation, and the autonomous South Tyrol region's government. The campus includes a dormitory and a canteen, and the sports facilities are located within the school quarter, allowing students to spend the whole day on campus.

Community

Baja is a regional center with a long history and a multi-ethnic heritage, inhabited by three nationalities and renowned for its economic, educational, cultural, and sports traditions. MNÁMK is a central cultural and educational hub for German language and culture in Hungary. The school is the organizer and venue for national/ethnic festivals and heritage events, and it plays a significant role in the city's visual arts, literary, theatre, and music life. It is an active participant in maintaining sister-city relationships. Our campus surrounds include the school's dormitory and canteen, with sports facilities located within the school quarter, so students can spend the entire day on one campus. The environment emphasizes two languages, two cultures, and two educational systems, with graduates often earning German and Hungarian diplomas as part of their studies.

Parent Teacher Association (PTA)

The school has a Parents' Organization (Szülői Szervezet). The organization has a president and is actively involved in school life and events. The administration engages with the Parents' Organization as part of the school community.

Admissions

Admissions

Admissions for students starting upper secondary school in September of the given academic year are conducted through the central upper secondary admissions process, and the application form must indicate the dormitory request. If applying during the school year, the parent must submit a written admission request to be considered by the head of the campus unit; the decision is communicated in writing, and dormitory status applies to the respective academic year. To renew a dormitory status that ends at the end of the school year, the parent may submit a written form; the deadline for submissions is May 30, or the last working day before that date. For enrollment in grades 2–10 at the German international school on UBZ Baja, a completed enrollment application and copies of the last two annual reports are required and should be sent by email to sekretariat@mnamk.hu. Admission decisions follow a personal interview with the school principal; admitted students receive an admission confirmation and must submit any missing documents. The admission decision depends on the number of available places and alignment with the educational program. Enrollment applications can be submitted year-round. For enrollment in grade 1, an information evening for parents of preschool children is held in early March, with the enrollment deadline at the end of March and admission interviews in early April; the decision follows shortly after and exact dates are published in the News section. The school does not participate in the centralized written admissions process. Applicants may apply to the language preparation class, the bilingual German minority gymnasium track, or the tourism track within the Technikum.
