History

Founded in 1964 by the Eastern Mennonite Board of Missions and Charities, Academia Los Pinares began as a boarding school in Tegucigalpa with 10 primary students. Within a year it moved to larger facilities at kilometer 14 toward La Tigra. In the 1970s it expanded to include local community students and added secondary levels; it was legally incorporated into the Honduran education system in 1974. In 1977 the Board announced the school's closure, but seven founding mission organizations joined forces to sustain it as a nonprofit; the current property was acquired in 1978 and all students moved to the new campus in 1980. In 1982 ALP helped found the Association of Bilingual Schools of Honduras (ABSH). It was accredited by SACS (Cognia) in 1984, joined ACSI in 1985, and joined FENIEPH in 1988. In 1997 the U.S. Department of State and the Department of Defense recognized the school as meeting expatriate/employee standards. Through the 2000s ALP continued to grow as a Christ-centered bilingual institution.
