Parent Experience

History

The Instituto Austriaco Guatemalteco was founded on January 6, 1958, by Dr. Harald König in a modest house in central Guatemala City. In 1968, the Zone 16 campus—the current site—was inaugurated, moving the school to a purpose-built campus. The 1976 earthquake tested the institution; the community rebuilt the campus and classes resumed in March. In 1980, the Foundation Cultural Austriaco Guatemalteca (FCAG) was formed as the owner of the school, and in 1986 the Colegio Viena was established to broaden educational offerings, with bilateral ties reinforced by a 1988 visit from an Austrian Minister of Education. In 1989–1990, the Asociación Amigos was founded to support Indigenous schools and the Casa Hogar was created as a home for children in need; from 1991 onward the school expanded physically and upgraded its programs, culminating in the 50th anniversary in 2008 and ongoing modernization, including a major underground parking project completed in 2025 and a leadership transition at the end of 2025.

Community

A piece of Austria in the heart of Guatemala: tradition, excellence, and a community that makes two cultures one home. Austrian-Guatemalan education with more than four decades of tradition, high academic standards, and warmth. We are part of a European community of values; Austria has been a member of the European Union since 1995, and the Institute serves as a meeting point within that community. Life at the IAG emphasizes intercultural connections and events such as Maifest and Maturaball, reflecting a bicultural identity and the motto Schul-Arbeit, die verbindet! (Education that connects). Dos culturas, una familia and ongoing European affiliations reinforce the school's cross-cultural relationships and international outlook.

Parent Teacher Association (PTA)

Asociación Amigos was founded in 1989 to support Indigenous schools, and in 1990 the Casa Hogar was established as an orphanage connected to the school. In 1976, the Ministry of Education awarded the Juan José Arevalo Bermejo Pedagogical Order, requested by the Asociación de Padres de Familia, highlighting active parent involvement. These organizations illustrate the school's history of parent and family engagement and community-oriented initiatives as part of its broader intercultural mission.
