Introduction

Ionideio Model General Lyceum of Piraeus is a coeducational secondary school located at Sotiros Dios 17, Piraeus, Greece. It offers a bespoke curriculum alongside the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, which is taught in English for all DP subjects except Language A (Modern Greek Language and Literature) and History. The school's long history began in 1847 as the Ionideios Schools, rooted in the 1844 appeal of Piraeus' mayor and the generous support of Konstantinos Ionidis. The building opposite the Municipal Theater, opened in 1932, continues a tradition that evolved into the Ionideio Model School of Piraeus, and since 1986 the Experimental Gymnasium and Lyceum. The campus supports a range of academic and cultural activities, including mathematics, arts, and language clubs and projects that connect classroom learning with inquiry and community engagement. This blend of history, IB study, and broad co-curriculars shapes a distinctive, locally rooted international education experience with global perspectives.

History

Ionideios opened in 1847 as the Greek School, with its origins tracing back to 1844 when the mayor of Piraeus, Petros Omirīdis Skilītēs, appealed to the philanthropist Konstantinos Ionidis for help in founding schools in Piraeus. Ionidis provided 30,000 drachmas on the condition that land be purchased and the municipality bear the school's costs; the Municipal Council accepted these terms in 1845. Construction began in 1847, and on May 21 of that year the Greek School and the Mutual Elementary School opened as Ionideios Schools, with Ionidis contributing a further 10,000 drachmas for the school and for a library. In 1862 the Ministry of Education established a Gymnasium, and by 1914 Ionideios was the sole Gymnasium in Piraeus; after the creation of a second Gymnasium, it was renamed A' Gymnasium of Piraeus. The original building remained in use until 1932, when it was demolished and replaced by the current building opposite the Municipal Theater, with ground-floor shops providing the main revenue for the school; in 1934-35 it became the School of Secondary Education of Piraeus, and in 1946-47 it was renamed A' Model Gymnasium for Boys of Piraeus; in 1963 it was renamed Ionideio Model School of Piraeus, and since 1986 it has been known as the Experimental Gymnasium and Lyceum of Ionideios.
Extra-Curricular Activities

Academic & Intellectual

The Mathematics Club focuses on problem solving across algebra, number theory, geometry, and combinatorics, with participation in national and international mathematics competitions. It develops problem‑solving techniques and trains students with competition‑style problems. The From Galileo to Higgs Club traces the Galileo affair and the shift from a geocentric to a heliocentric worldview, linking science to contemporary exploration. Students engage with gravitational waves and fundamental interactions, including occurrences related to VIRGO and CERN, and discuss these topics in relation to modern research ( ITER ).

Arts & Creative

The Journalism, Creative Expression, and Inquiry‑Based Learning Club enriches the school magazine and records students' thoughts, views, interests, and actions, including research and artistic works. The magazine covers topics such as current events, school life, the history of the school and the Port, arts, culture, and sports, and includes interviews with journalists, writers, and artists. It also develops audio, video, and digital media projects, including radio and podcasts. Cinema and Digital Creation, and related theatre‑oriented groups, encourage students to produce screenplays, films, and other digital artworks with collaboration from university departments and other clubs. The Music and Performing Arts group helps students explore musical composition, arrangements, and performances, often pairing music with literary or theatrical creation.

Cultural & Language

Intercultural Approaches aims to deepen understanding of culture by studying the history and culture of a European country or city, and to explore related topics in teamwork and creativity, with a view to participating in the 6th International Student Conference ELEMASYN. It presents two thematic axes: Axis I – Culture (art, literature, philosophy, architecture, fashion) and Axis II – Science (medicine, physics, technology, environment, innovations), guiding in‑depth study and presentation. The group also includes the “If Karυrioτakis had Insta” activity, which uses modern social media to engage with poetry and the poet's persona, exploring public image and digital storytelling.

Social & Hobbies

Students explore creative expression and collaboration through theatre, film, poetry, and music, with opportunities to publish, perform, and collaborate across groups. The cinema and digital creation groups foster artistic production, including screenplays, directing, filming, editing, and sound design, often in partnership with theatre studies and media departments. The theatre‑oriented groups—such as From Text to Performance—engage students in writing, directing, acting, and producing theatrical works for student festivals. The poetry and music groups allow students to compose, perform, and present original works and literary creations.

Community & Service

Participation in the Youth Parliament educational program is available to represent the school in this civic activity. The Rhetoric Club also emphasizes persuasive communication and public speaking as a component of its activities, contributing to leadership and civic engagement. These opportunities provide avenues for service, communication, and collective action within the school community.

Leadership & Professional

The Rhetoric Club develops public speaking, persuasive argumentation, and critical thinking, with explicit emphasis on life skills. It fosters teamwork, leadership, and professional communication through debate, competitions, and presentations. The Youth Parliament program offers authentic leadership and civic‑engagement experiences for students. Lifeskills and leadership development are highlighted as aims within these activities.

Lifestyle & Wellbeing

Basketball features an ‘Individual Technique and Special Physical Conditioning' group that combines skill development with fitness testing, including body measurements and physical assessments. A Volleyball group focuses on the development of general and specific fitness, individual technique, team tactics, and participation in school competitions. Both groups include scheduled practice days and opportunities to compete in friendlies and school championships, promoting physical wellbeing and teamwork.
