Parent Experience

History
Founded in the late 1950s, the Colegio Alemán Humboldt de Guayaquil began when German teacher Renate Collmann de Lembke ran a bilingual kindergarten (Spanish-English). After Fritz Witte proposed the project, the bilingual program transitioned to German and a preschool-through-primary school was established to foster cultural exchange, mutual understanding, and friendship between Ecuador and Germany. After Germany granted permission to Mr. Witte, lengthy negotiations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs lasted nearly two years; Witte died before the project was realized, and Claus Riemann, joined by Paul Klein and Richard Zeller, and a growing group of German and Ecuadorian supporters, continued the initiative. In 1964 the school moved to its own facilities in Los Ceibos, far from the city at that time but with strong growth potential. In 1972, with the leadership of Dr. Ernst Seebas, a scholarship program was created to enable families with fewer resources to access quality education.

Community
The Humboldt Association sponsors the Colegio Alemán Humboldt de Guayaquil and conducts governance in line with Auslandsschulqualitätsmanagement (AQM), the quality framework required by the German central office for overseas schools (ZfA). This work involves three areas: the Executive Council, the General Rectorate, and the Financial Administrative Direction. Members of the Executive Council administer the school from the administrative sphere in conjunction with the General Rectorate and the Financial Administrative Direction.

Parent Teacher Association (PTA)
The Central Committee of Parents (CCDPF) conducts activities ad honorem, with its board elected annually by the presidents of each grade of the school. The CCDPF organizes the annual Day of Field (Familienfest), a family-themed event in which CAH families participate. The CCDPF is responsible for generating and managing resources for the CAH Study Subsidy Fund, which ensures studies through graduation for students in the morning section in the event of a parent's death. Access to the CAH Subsidy Fund requires: staying current with the annual Fund fee, having paid fees for the last four years, and purchasing six tickets for Day of Field in the final year. Facilities Overview
CAH Guayaquil is a laic school with a German educational approach and an emphasis on languages, sciences, and universal democratic values. Extracurricular sports activities include Mini Olimpiadas for lower levels, Bundesjugendspiele, and internal swimming championships, with CAH students also participating in intercollegiate events in the city. Humboldt Games, exclusive to German international schools, are a biannual regional sporting exchange; the school hosted events in Lima in 2025 as part of this tradition.

Academic Facilities
The science facilities include Biology, Chemistry, Physics laboratories and an Informatics/Robotics lab in a modern science building. The school runs exchanges with Germany. Students in 9th EGB stay 11 weeks in German cities with host families and attend local schools to strengthen German and prepare for the Sprachdiplom I. A Deportivo exchange sends 7th, 8th, and 10th EGB students to sports schools in Leipzig, Berlin, and Hamburg to participate in championships and clubs. Sommercamp provides a four-week summer experience for 5th, 6th and 7th EGB, with two weeks at a hostel and two weeks living with German host families and attending classes.

Social & Hobbies
Sports are a dedicated area of the complementary activities program, with opportunities to participate in internal championships and sports clubs. The three complementary areas also include cultural and academic activities, enabling students to pursue interests beyond the classroom.

Languages

Language Provision
Languages taught include German and English. German begins in preschool (age 3) with immersion, and from Grade 2 there are five hours of German per week. English is taught from Grade 5 through Grade 12, with four to five hours per week and additional university-focused English in the second and third year of Bachillerato; TOEFL and Cambridge are also offered. The school operates the International Baccalaureate program (BI) and a German IB track (GIB). Deutsches Sprachdiplom and Cambridge English certifications are available.

Bilingual Teaching
The school uses a bilingual teaching model. In Kindergarten, each class has two teachers, one German-speaking and one Spanish-speaking. From 2nd to 3rd grade there is one teacher and an assistant for core classes, with specialized teachers for German, music, art, and physical education. From 4th grade onward, different teachers teach each subject, while English instruction begins in Grade 5.

Immersion Programs
In preschool the school uses an immersion language method. In each Kindergarten class there are two teachers, one German-speaking and one Spanish-speaking, who speak only their respective languages throughout the day. German is present throughout the day in preschool. From Grade 2 onward, there are five hours of German per week, and German language examinations are offered: A1 in Grade 5, A2 in Grade 8, Sprachdiplom I in Grade 10, and Sprachdiplom II in Grade 12.
