Parent Experience

History

The First Rijeka Croatian Gymnasium traces its origins to 1627, when Jesuits established a college with a gymnasium in Rijeka, marking the start of secondary education in the city. It began operating on 23 November near St. Vitus Cathedral with about 150 students; Latin was the core subject, and academies produced works in Latin, Italian, and Croatian, presented publicly. After the Jesuit order was suppressed in 1773 and through subsequent political changes, German and Hungarian languages were introduced and the school continued through periods including French rule and early 19th‑century shifts. The Croatian national revival intensified in Rijeka during the 19th century, but Magyarization pressures led to relocations and disruptions to Croatian‑language education in Rijeka by 1896. After World War II, Rijeka and Sušak united, the Croatian gymnasium was reintroduced in Rijeka at Frana Kurelca Street in a building by the Hungarian architect Göyzö Czigler, and it evolved through several names before becoming Prva riječka hrvatska gimnazija in 1992/93; a large number of notable people passed through the school as students or teachers.

Community

The PRHG community features student clubs such as the school magazine KULT, the Volunteering Club PRHG, the Gimnazijalac school sports club, and the literary program Rijeka riječi. It runs EU‑funded projects, including the Erasmus+‑supported (Su)djelujem – a student council in a democratic school (1 February 2023–31 January 2024, with Delta as a partner) and cross‑border ASOC programs that promote civic education and data journalism. Other projects include Archive to Alive, SiLab, Steps 2030 World, Life After Sport, and German‑language initiatives, and the school holds Erasmus+ accreditation among its activities.

Parent Teacher Association (PTA)

The Parents' Council provides advisory support to the school and works with class teachers; it participates in planning and implementing topics at class councils on a quarterly basis and as needed; it offers guidance in addressing issues in classes or with individual students; it prepares materials for homeroom teachers at the start of the year; it assists in the process of implementing pedagogical measures and participates in parent meetings; it collaborates with the principal and school staff to improve educational work.
