Uniform Requirement
Uniform: The uniform is mandatory for all students from 1st grade through 12th grade; Preschool is not mandatory. Governance and Ownership
The Institute is governed by the Grupo Gestor, a commission responsible for directing, coordinating and promoting school development to improve the quality of school work. Instituto Alemán Carlos Anwandter teaches IB (DP), Bespoke Curriculum, German Curriculum for students aged 3 to 18.

Curriculum
IB stands for International Baccalaureate and encompasses quality international education programs offered to a global community of schools. The organization that governs IB is the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), founded in 1968 and headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, which sets program content, trains teachers, provides standardized examinations, and regulates program procedures. Our Institute obtained official authorization to deliver the Diploma Programme of the bilingual International Baccalaureate in 2010, enabling us to offer an internationally recognized education program. The Diploma Programme is implemented within a unified curriculum framework. The IB philosophy aims to form socially responsible, informed, and knowledge-seeking young people who can contribute to a better and more peaceful world within mutual understanding and intercultural respect.

Exam Results
Since 2003, fifteen students took the Preliminary English Test (PET) with a 100% pass rate. In 2014 PET became mandatory for all II Medio students; since 2020 the option has been to offer only the Certificate in Advanced English CAE for IV Medio, which is voluntary. Our students have taken Cambridge English certification exams, with results presented on the school results page.
Wellbeing

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)
Comprehensive development through life-skills workshops. Practical sessions coordinated by the Governing Group focus on self-awareness, social harmony, and self-care. The end-of-year program emphasizes personal growth and well-being. These activities promote self-regulation, empathy, and positive interpersonal relationships across the school community.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)
English is taught as a third language. Instruction follows the national curriculum and English language assessment is guided by Cambridge English exams using the CEFR levels from A1 to C2. Students began learning English in 5th grade; in 2009 it was extended to 4th grade with two hours per week. The program covers listening, speaking, reading, and writing using texts provided by parents from SyM Dayton. Since 2021, English has been taught through team-teaching in 5th–8th grades, with the 11th grade joining this modality in 2024. Classes are divided into two groups for the four weekly English hours to personalize instruction and accelerate language acquisition.

Mental Wellbeing
Life-skills workshops support mental wellbeing. Practical sessions coordinated by the Governing Group focus on self-awareness, social harmony, and self-care, with emphasis on end-of-year activities. These experiences contribute to resilience and a positive school climate.

Safeguarding
Right of withdrawal for use of student images: legal guardians may submit the withdrawal form on this page. The withdrawal becomes effective within 10 working days from the date the form is submitted, after internal notifications. Revocation affects all photographs, videos, and audiovisual presentations of the student for the current school year and the following school year, including the summer break. If guardians wish to renew permission, they must come to the school to fill out and sign the renewal form in person at Administration. Renewal takes effect within 10 working days from the date the form is submitted.
Parent Experience

History
The Instituto Alemán Carlos Anwandter was founded in 1858 by German immigrants to serve Valdivia's German community. In its early years, the classrooms blended games, songs, and laughter with education, uniting the best of two cultures. Over time, the Instituto Alemán became a symbol of tradition and a bastion of progress and modernity introduced by the settlers in southern Chile. Today it is one of the country's most prestigious schools, aligning the Chilean curriculum with the German government's guidelines for German schools abroad, supported by expert German teachers and funding from Germany. Students may pursue the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme from II Medio to IV Medio, study German and English, and take the Deutsches Sprachdiplom I and II (levels B1 and C1) as well as English exams PET, First Certificate, and CAE. Beginning in II Medio, students have the opportunity to participate in a three-month school exchange with German peers and undertake a two-week joint educational trip.

Community
The educational community is pluralistic and rooted in the Chilean-German tradition, preparing students for higher education in Chile and Germany. The school supports bilingual education in German and English and offers the IB Diploma Programme from II to IV Medio, together with German language diplomas and English exams. Students have the opportunity to participate in a three-month exchange with Germany in II Medio and to join a two-week educational itinerary in Germany. The CGPA (Centre General de Padres y Apoderados) was created in 1967 to collaborate with the school in educating our children within the educational and social framework of the institution; it also runs Escuela para Padres to train parents and support family development. Each course is represented by a delegate and a sub-delegate who form the Council of Delegates, and elections are held by the CGPA's Electoral Tribunal to appoint a seven-member board (five titular and two substitutes) whose two-year terms are set; the General Assembly formed by all CGPA member families is the supreme body. The school maintains a Student Center and an Alumni Center to support the wider community.

Parent Teacher Association (PTA)
The Centre General de Padres y Apoderados (CGPA) of Instituto Alemán Carlos Anwandter was created in 1967 to collaborate with the school in educating our children, reaching common accords for their welfare within the educational and social framework of the institution. In addition to fundraising activities, internal activities for parent education are held through the Escuela para Padres to improve the service to the educational community and to support family development. Each course is represented by a Delegate and a Sub-Delegate forming the Council of Delegates; through the CGPA Electoral Tribunal, elections select a seven-member board (five titular and two substitutes) serving two years. The Council's superior body is the General Assembly, formed by all member families of the CGPA. The current board comprises: President: Alexia Wolodarsky; Vice President: Lesly Leal; Secretary: Alejandro Aichele; Treasurer: Iris Neira; Director: Karina Vial.
Facilities

Facilities Overview
The Instituto Alemán Carlos Anwandter is located at Los Laureles 050, Isla Teja, Valdivia. The Kindergarten has facilities appropriate for preschool students, including play areas, classrooms, furnishings, bathrooms, a kitchen, a gym, and two large halls. The campus includes a gym, a kitchen, playgrounds, and a garden. The library offers grade-based sections and defined hours for student use. There is a Robotics Workshop on campus to support robotics education.

Sports Facilities
The sports facilities include a synthetic football pitch and a gym on campus. A second gym, Gimnasio 2, is used for ceremonies and activities. Football events are held on the synthetic pitch and in gymnasiums on campus. The grounds host sports activities and events on the available indoor and outdoor spaces.

Academic Facilities
The library is open Monday through Thursday from 08:30 to 18:00 and Friday from 08:30 to 13:30. The library is organized into sections by grade level (e.g., 1st and 2nd basic; 2nd and 3rd basic; from 4th basic onward). Preschoolers can visit the library with parents on scheduled days. The campus includes a Robotics Workshop (Taller de Robótica) that supports STEM education.

Extra Curricular Facilities
Extracurricular activities cover sports, scientific and cultural areas. The sports area promotes healthy living and regular physical activity. In the scientific area, robotics workshops are offered. In the cultural area, there are instrument classes, participation in the Orchestra, the Children's and Youth Choir, the Instrumental Workshop, and workshops in Visual Arts and Theater. Students are encouraged to participate in up to two extracurricular activities.

The school offers science-focused extracurriculars. The Science Area includes workshops that foster scientific and technological curiosity, such as Robotics. It also features the Mathematics Academy and Umwelt und Natur (Environment and Nature).

Arts development is a priority. Students may take instrument classes, join the Orchestra, the Children's and Youth Choir, the Instrumental Workshop, and participate in workshops for Visual Arts and Theater. These activities help students grow artistically.

Languages

Language Provision
English is taught as a foreign language in line with the national Ministry of Education program. Students begin English in 4th grade (previously 5th) with two hours per week. There is no formal grade for English. Since 2021, English is taught through team-teaching in 5th to 8th grades, and starting in 2024 the 1º Medio level joined this approach. Texts come from the SyM Dayton publishing house. The school is part of the network of German-speaking schools in Chile.

Bilingual Teaching
The Kindergarten uses a bilingual approach. In Spielgruppe (3–4 years), German is spoken in the morning through immersion by the lead teacher and co-teacher. In Prekinder (4–5) and Kinder (5–6), a bilingual tandem is used: the lead teacher speaks exclusively German and the co-teacher speaks Spanish; daily dialogue between teachers is bilingual. The bilingual concept is applied in the Kindergarten.

Registration: online from Monday, March 16 to Sunday, March 22, 2026, via the postulation form available at intranet.dsv.cl/postulacion-formulario/ on the institutional site www.dsvaldivia.cl. 2. Online: submission of videos via Google Classroom from Monday, March 23 to Sunday, March 29, 2026. 3. In-person: two afternoons of observation in the Preschool facilities, by invitation via email, between Tuesday, March 31 and Wednesday, April 1. 4. Evaluation, pre-selection and selection: as detailed in points 4, 5 and 6 of this document. 5. Publication of results: April 6, 2026. 6. Enrollment period: April 6–8, 2026. If there is a waiting list, enrollments will take place between April 13 and 15, 2026. Requisitos de postulación: Prekinder: minimum age of 4 years completed as of March 31, 2026. In-person stage: two afternoons of observation in the Preschool, with observation by teachers, a special education teacher, and a psychologist; the activity runs on two consecutive days between March 31 and April 1, with details provided by email. 4. Final evaluation: videos are analyzed by the technical-pedagogical admission team. 5. Pre-selection: applicants achieving at least 70% of the total observation score are preselected. 6. Pre-selection (detailed): among those with at least 70%, priority is given to applicants with direct ties to the Instituto Alemán de Valdivia (e.g., sibling of a student, child of staff, native German speaker, former student with 10+ years, German national, or from a German-speaking country). If scores are equal, direct ties are given preference; remaining vacancies are filled from other applicants with at least 70%, in descending order of score. If a sibling with lower score is admitted, guardians sign a commitment to provide external supports; in case of remaining vacancies, the team may consider siblings of admitted students with lower scores under certain conditions. 7. Date and place of results: results communicated no later than April 6, 2026 via email and published in a list at Secretariat. 8. Enrollment period: April 6–April 8, 2026 at the Administration Secretariat. 9. Waitlist: applicants with at least 70% who are not selected join a waitlist ordered by score; if vacancies remain after enrollments, waitlisted applicants with higher scores are admitted in descending order. 10. Report: for applicants not admitted, a report on the observations can be requested via email. 11. Educational project: the Educational Project of the Instituto Alemán de Valdivia Carlos Anwandter, including mission, vision and principles, can be reviewed online.

Scholarships
Scholarships: scholarships are tuition rebates for students in economically disadvantaged situations with average grades and good conduct. Application window: December 1–12, 2016. Forms are available in the Administration Office (Angelika Korts) starting November 24, 2016 and must be submitted in person at the same office with supporting documents. Applications are evaluated for students who are actually enrolled and whose tuition is up to date.

Waitlist
Waitlist: applicants who achieve at least 70% on the evaluation and are not admitted will be placed on a waitlist, in descending order by the percentage of achievement. If vacancies become available after enrollments, waitlisted applicants with higher scores will be admitted first, in descending order.
