History

The Mont Notre-Dame was founded in 1857 through the collaboration of the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre-Dame, Madame Clara Lloyd Felton, and Father Alfred-Élie Dufresne, as a Catholic school for francophone and anglophone girls. In 1875–76 the school underwent its first expansion, and in 1902 a second expansion added a theatre, the Grande Salle. In 1922 Mont Notre-Dame was designated the provincial house of the Congregation for the Estrie region, triggering major architectural changes; annexes were added in 1926 and 1928, and a gymnasium for girls was opened. In 1969 the elementary boarding school closed, and in 1976 the Notre-Dame Convent became Collège Mont Notre-Dame de Sherbrooke. Beginning in 1915 the school introduced a commercial course for bilingual secretaries, a kindergarten for girls and boys in 1940, Latin-Sciences in 1960, and in 1990 was among the first schools in Quebec and Canada to be recognized as international education, with a Cadence partnership starting the same year.

The Foundation of Collège Mont Notre-Dame de Sherbrooke is a non-profit organization created on August 29, 1983 and formed by the Association of Parents. Its mission is to support the College's development through monetary contributions to projects and to facilitate access for students from families who cannot meet the fees. Parents and volunteers are invited to get involved by organizing fundraising activities and assisting at events, and donations can be made online or by mail. Since its creation, the Foundation has distributed more than $1 million in scholarships and grants to the College and its students. The 2025–2026 Board of Directors includes Karine Leureux (President) and Letta Wellinger (Vice-President) among others, with ongoing involvement from the Association des anciennes.
