Academics

Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf teaches IB (DP), Canadian Curriculum.

Curriculum

Secondary education runs from 1re to 5e secondaire, built on a solid common core called the Brébeuf curriculum. The core is enriched for all students with options that deepen study according to interests, including Sport et monde, Latin et monde, and Espagnol et monde. Brébeuf emphasizes Jesuit humanist values, with community engagement mandatory for all students and interdisciplinary projects such as cross‑disciplinary investigations, an international fair, and the 5e citoyen project recognized by the Ministry. An enriched program extends across all profiles with a strong emphasis on sciences and mathematics, careful attention to French, and four levels of English to meet student needs. Students develop study skills for college readiness—autonomy, curiosity, tenacity, research, and organization—and may pursue elite‑level sports if desired. Since 2013, instruction from 1re to 4e secondaire is non‑mixed; boys and girls are placed in separate classes, but social interaction occurs in shared spaces.

Higher Education Progression

Brébeuf's college program emphasizes pathways into health sciences and engineering; graduates frequently pursue studies in highly selective faculties. The college sends the largest share of its Sciences de la nature graduates to medical and related programs, and Brébeuf is the leading source of new medical students to Université de Montréal and the francophone medical contingent at McGill. Graduates also enter faculties including architecture, law, psychology, and related fields, with many continuing to programs in engineering, mathematics, and the sciences. These destinations reflect Brébeuf's strong preparation for both professional and academic futures.

Gifted and Talented

The school offers an advanced profile called Eurêk@, available in Sciences de la santé and in Sciences pures et appliquées, which uses a laptop‑driven pedagogy with simulations, modeling, software problem solving, and lab sensor work to develop higher‑level scientific thinking and problem solving.
Wellbeing

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

The college provides a multidisciplinary psychosocial team that offers confidential, personalized support to promote emotional well-being and help students manage personal, social, and emotional challenges. Psychosocial interveners provide one-on-one support for stress, anxiety, relationships, and crises, and organize workshops and activities to promote mental and emotional well-being. The college also offers health services through a school nurse and a sexologist who delivers education and support on sexuality, relationships, and violence. The health service is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 16:45 and provides confidential clinical evaluation, first aid, and referrals.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

The college provides accommodations for students with special needs or functional limitations. It supports conditions such as ADHD, learning disorders, mental health concerns, and physical, sensory, or neurological differences. To access accommodations, students provide medical documentation or an evaluation report (neuropsychological, speech-language or psychological). The orthopédagogie team conducts short-term individual or group follow-ups, writes intervention plans, and implements adaptive measures for EHDAA in collaboration with the school administration and teachers. Tutoring support is available, including volunteer tutoring for secondary and college students and paid external tutoring when recommended.

Mental Wellbeing

The college provides psychosocial intervention services to support mental well-being. Intervenants psychosociales offer confidential, individualized support to help students understand and regulate emotions, cope with stress, and maintain balance. They provide crisis support and referral when needed and work to promote mental and emotional well-being through workshops and activities. Hours for psychosocial services are Monday to Friday 8:30 to 16:30.

Safeguarding

The college has a policy to prevent and combat sexual violence within the campus community. The policy defines sexual violence, outlines prevention, awareness, safety and complaint-handling, and ensures accountability and support for all involved. Any person who is a victim or a witness may file a complaint in person at the service desk or report anonymously by email or by phone. The college also provides a sexologist who offers education on sexuality and violence and serves as a resource for related concerns.
Parent Experience

History

The school traces its origins to the Jesuit-founded Collège Sainte-Marie in Montreal, established in 1848. In 1909 the Jesuits purchased the Leslie farm in Côte-des-Neiges to house the project, and construction of Brébeuf began in 1927. The college opened on September 12, 1928, and in 1929 signed with Université de Montréal an agreement authorizing it to confer a Bachelor of Arts. From its founding Brébeuf followed the Jesuit educational tradition, with a predominantly Jesuit faculty for many years and an eight-year classical program culminating in the BA, with a strong emphasis on languages and a broad curriculum. In the 1960s, the Jesuits proposed merging Brébeuf with Sainte-Marie to form a new university, but the Royal Commission on Education in 1961 led Brébeuf to abandon the plan; the college then moved toward the cégep model, began offering the new college program in 1968 and abandoned the classical program in 1972, while coeducation was introduced in 1968–69; in 1986 the Society of Jesus transferred Brébeuf to a lay corporation, with the last Jesuit director remaining until 1991.

Community

The school's life includes a dynamic offering of more than 60 sociocultural committees and activities, enabling students to develop all facets of their personality and autonomy. Every year, more than 100 sports, artistic, cultural and community activities are offered to collegial students, organized with the collaboration of teachers, staff and external contributors, and they are recognized through the Distinction Brébeuf. Volunteer engagement is encouraged through extracurricular groups such as the First Aid Intervention Group (GISB), the Réseau d'entraide des étudiants de Brébeuf, Amnesty International, the ecological committee, and ROTARACT, and the Residence service provides supervision to support a positive study climate and student development.

Parent Teacher Association (PTA)

Created in the early 1980s and incorporated in 1991, the Association des parents du Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf is a non-profit corporation that collaborates to enrich the College's educational life. Its objectives include helping parents participate actively in their children's education, promoting students' interests, serving as the voice of all parents, defending the College's interests when needed, and encouraging social involvement, creativity and initiative among students. It has representation on the College's board and on statutory committees, and it runs dynamic committees and administers grants to support College initiatives. The Association also recognizes student involvement through awards such as the Distinction Érasme and manages other subsidies.
