Introduction

Victor Hugo Lycée Français de Sofia is a French AEFE-conventionné school in Sofia serving ages 2 to 18, under the Embassy of France. Founded in 1966, it educates about 800 pupils from maternelle to terminale, with most teaching by French staff and Bulgarian specialists where needed. It follows the French national curriculum, including the three-year nouveau lycée; students progress from 2nde to 1ère and terminale, selecting three specialty subjects in 1ère and two in terminale for the Baccalauréat. A language-focused approach integrates the host-country language for all students and promotes English and other languages in a multicultural setting. The academic life centers on the Centre for Knowledge and Culture (3C), a library and knowledge hub with databases and a librarian to support information literacy and autonomous learning. Facilities include a Furisto-run restaurant, daycare and holiday camps, and a Sports Association offering badminton, basketball and tennis (NSA venues). Academics

Victor Hugo Lycée Français de Sofia teaches French Curriculum for students aged 2 to 18.

Curriculum

The high school follows the French national system with a three-year lycée (the 'nouveau lycée'). The class of 2nde leads to the terminal cycle. After 2nde, students follow a two-year program to prepare for the general baccalaureate, consisting of 1ère and terminale, organized into common teachings, specialty teachings and optional teachings to prepare for higher education. With the nouveau lycée, students choose three specialty subjects in 1ère and retain two in terminale. The three-year curriculum culminates in the Baccalauréat, with a progression through common, specialty and optional teachings.

Exam Results

The school reports a 100% pass rate for the Baccalauréat, with around 95% of results classified as excellent.

Higher Education Progression

Most graduates continue their studies in French higher education institutions and top international universities.
Parent Experience

History

The school was founded in 1966. It is locally supervised by the Embassy of France in Sofia and is an AEFE conventionné (French international) school. It hosts 827 students from maternelle (kindergarten) to terminale. Most teaching is provided by French teachers, with Bulgarian staff recruited for specialized roles. From age 3, children follow a French curriculum, with a language-focused approach that integrates the host-country language for all students and promotes English and other international languages in a multicultural setting.

Community

The LVH community emphasizes exchanges and linguistic and cultural encounters, forming a shared experience grounded in the secular, social, and fraternal values of the French Republic. The school educates students from diverse backgrounds, including host-country children and international pupils. A rich pedagogical dynamic is carried by numerous artistic and cultural projects, environmental initiatives, and civic life activities, with language learning being central due to a pilot language program. Extracurricular and sports activities accompany student development.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Academic & Intellectual

The Center of Knowledge and Culture, known as the 3C, is an educational project and space that brings together people and documents for learning and mediation. It combines encyclopedias, a CD-ROM collection, databases, and the CCC as learning spaces in which information and knowledge are explored. The Internet is viewed as a hyperspace that enables encounter and exploration, while the 3C emphasizes language mastery as support for other learning. It also helps to decloisonner spaces and give students more autonomy, allowing teachers to tailor student support and develop new teaching practices.

Arts & Creative

The school runs a broad program of after-school clubs for nursery through primary and through collège, with activities starting after class at 15:30 and on Wednesdays from 13:00. Activities are artistic, educational, and athletic, and include sessions to help with homework by level. Examples of clubs include pottery, French music, mini-painting, storytime, and mini-tennis, among others.

Cultural & Language

Clubs for language and culture are offered from kindergarten through collège, with some activities conducted in Bulgarian and English and some in French. Several clubs are bilingual or multilingual (BG/ENG or FR). The school also hosts a multilingual web radio that features programming in multiple languages, including English, Bulgarian, and French, with broadcasts spanning from elementary to lycée.

Social & Hobbies

After-school clubs cover social and hobby interests beyond academics, including theatre games, dance, music, sport, and board games. The Primaire et collège clubs include Ciné-club (films), Jeux de théâtre (theatre games), and a variety of arts and sports programs.

Community & Service

The Caisse de solidarité provides financial assistance to families in difficulty, funded by voluntary donations and school fundraising, to help with tuition, meals, exam fees, travel, and school supplies. The fund is managed by representatives of the board and the school and reviews dossiers in January. AEFE scholarships are available to eligible French families in Bulgaria, with the consular council meeting twice a year to consider applications, and online submission via SCOLAIDE. The daycare and leisure centers offer after-school care and activities for younger students.

Leadership & Professional

Stage professionnel des 3èmes gives students in 3e a week of job discovery, allowing them to observe professional life, interact with professionals, and build autonomy. Students document and present their experiences, gaining clarity on their orientation and future work. The school also maintains active student leadership structures, including the Conseil de la Vie Lycéenne (CVL) for lycée students and, at the collège level, the Conseils des Délégués pour la Vie Collégienne (CVC), which provide spaces for student voices and project development.

Lifestyle & Wellbeing

The medical service at LVH includes a school doctor, a school nurse, and two psychologists to support health, well-being, and learning, with confidential handling of medical information and regular health screenings for certain grade levels. The school's sports program, L'Association Sportive du LVH (AS LVH), offers activities such as volleyball, futsal, basketball, and dance after school and on a Wednesday schedule. Garderie and leisure centers provide after-school care from 15:45 to 17:45, with a separate, paid arrangement for younger children and a separate option for TPS; homework help is available in some cases. The medical service, sports activities, and after-school care collectively support student well-being and daily-life needs.
Languages

Language Provision

French is the language of instruction across the nursery, elementary, and lycée. The school is homologated by the French Ministry of Education and AEFE-affiliated. Bulgarian is taught within the official timetable to ensure mastery of Bulgarian language and culture, for Bulgarian-speaking and other students. English is taught to all elementary students and is part of the lycée curriculum as well. Non-French-speaking students receive linguistic support to help integration.
Admissions

Admissions

As parents, you participate in LVH's consultative bodies by electing your representatives. The school council and the council for the establishment involve school partners, particularly parents, in reflection on the life of the establishment, and it is essential that you are a participant in these bodies.
