The school has a formal uniform. All students wear the official school uniform daily; on PE days the PE uniform is worn; during colder months long-sleeved T-shirts and jackets with the school logo are worn. A-Level students are not required to wear a uniform but must dress in professional business attire. Curriculum

The curriculum is a synthesis of the UK National Curriculum and the Azerbaijan National Curriculum. Wellbeing

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

ABC has a holistic pastoral care program focused on the academic, social, emotional, physical and spiritual wellbeing of every student. Form Tutors in Secondary and Class Teachers in Primary and Preschool provide daily contact and act as the main link between school and home. A team of specialists provides additional support within the pastoral framework. PSHCE addresses personal, social, health, community and emotional education, coordinated by the PSHCE Coordinator in Primary and by Heads of Key Stages in Secondary. Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Inclusive Learning ensures universal learning with differentiation in the classroom. For students needing additional help, targeted support and inclusive education plans are provided, led by a Director of Inclusion and SEN coordinators, with reviews involving parents. English as an Additional Language is identified and supported with in-class materials tailored to the learner, in-class support from staff, or English intervention sessions, and decisions require parental consent and rationale. Up to 15% of the community are identified as having learning difficulties, and inclusive practices aim to remove barriers to learning. Access provisions, such as lifts, support practical participation, and where needed external agencies may be involved to support a learner.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

Information is mainly delivered in English. Additional support for EAL students is provided to enable access and improve English language skills, including in-class adaptations, in-class support, or targeted English intervention sessions. No decision on these supports is made without full parental consent and rationale.

Mental Wellbeing

Pastoral care includes a focus on emotional wellbeing, with daily or tutorial-time discussions to support students' moods and progress. Safeguarding

Parent Experience

History

The Azerbaijan British College Educational Complex (ABC) was officially established as an international school in 2012 on a site west of central Baku. Its foundation was facilitated by the Azerbaijan International Education Center Public Union (AIEC) and received financial support from SOCAR. After three months of intensive staff training, the EYFS department and Year 1 opened on 1 November 2012 with 14 teachers and 20 children. In 2015, ABC was accredited as both an Edexcel Centre and a Cambridge International School, enabling Primary and Secondary Checkpoints as well as IGCSE and A-Level examinations. In 2021, ABC achieved the status as Azerbaijan's and Central Asia's/Caucasus region's sole school with fully accredited member status with COBIS and CIS.

Community

Open Day events welcome families and provide opportunities to explore classrooms and lessons. ABC publishes monthly newsletters for parents and students, and offers ABC Workshops for parents and students to develop skills and engage with the school community. The school provides a range of extracurricular activities, including school clubs, Arts & Clubs, and sports such as basketball, with Safe Transport arrangements in place. The strategic plan also calls for re-introducing an annual show and increasing parental involvement in the school.

Facilities Overview

ABC operates across early years Preschool, Primary and Secondary in Baku, Azerbaijan. The campus features two on-site swimming pools used for weekly lessons for Reception and above, with the pools described as featuring the latest technology. On-site catering provides healthy meals and snacks for students and staff; more than 1,000,000 meals are prepared each year and menus and allergen information are available. Transport for students uses the newest and most modern vehicles to ensure safety. The school supports a library and a broad extra-curricular program including clubs and enrichment activities.

Sports Facilities

Sport is a core part of student development at ABC. The sport program uses a range of curricular activities including games, dance, gymnastics, swimming, fitness and athletics to build skills and well-being. An extra-curricular sport program offers activities beyond lessons. Football, basketball and swimming are the main sports in competitive programs. All Reception and above participate in weekly on-site swimming lessons with a qualified coach in the two on-site pools.

ABC teaches the Cambridge Core Curriculum as the core for Key Stage 3. The Foundation Curriculum covers the arts, physical exercise and the humanities, while the Global Student Development strand develops the whole child. Admissions

Waitlist

If an applicant is accepted but there is no space in the appropriate class, the learner is placed on a waiting list and the parents are informed. When a place becomes available, it is offered to a learner on the waiting list. Criteria used to decide which learner on the waiting list is offered a place include the admission criteria, whether a sibling is already in or applying to the school, the existing gender/language balance of the class, background/experience in a British National Curriculum/English-medium education, and the family's planned length of stay.
