History

The school has a forty-plus year history of teaching using the German language and contributes to Bayswater's German heritage. Bayswater's Germanic history is central to the school's identity, reflecting the suburb's long tradition of German culture. In Bayswater's early history the township was called Macauley and nicknamed Germantown due to German immigrants; the railway arrived in 1889 and the township became Bayswater. In the 1920s the surrounding land was largely German-owned farmland, and in the late 1940s more German families settled in the area, with ties to the Templer Society continuing in the community. Today Bayswater is multicultural, and German heritage remains a part of the school's identity.

Community

The Community Spirit Award recognises an individual who has made a significant contribution to the school. Nominations for the 2024 Bayswater South PS Spirit Award are open. The award commemorates Bayswater South Primary School's 50 years of primary education in 2019 and seeks to recognise inspirational teachers, staff and community members. Brigitte Schmelzle, the 2019 winner, contributed to the German language program and to the school community through teaching, program development and community links.

Parent Teacher Association (PTA)

The school has a Parents' Club; parents are key partners in their child's learning and collaborate with the school and other parents to support students and build community. A Volunteer Program exists, offering roles such as Parents' Club members, sport marshals, excursion supervisors, classroom helpers, librarians, resource creators and Café Klatsch staff. Officers include a President, Vice President, Secretary, and Communications Officer, with bspsparents@gmail.com as a contact. Meeting notes and AGM minutes are published, and a Working With Children check is required for volunteers. Events and sign-ups are coordinated through the Parents' Club Facebook page.
