Academics

Curriculum

The school follows the Victorian Curriculum across English and Mathematics. English is guided by the Victorian Curriculum English scope and sequence, with Reading and Viewing, Writing, and Speaking and Listening developed across Language, Literature and Literacy, and the six pillars of literacy — oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary development, fluency and comprehension — underpin instruction. The school is an International Baccalaureate World School offering the Primary Years Programme, with six units of inquiry each year. Specialist programs include Physical Education, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), Language (Mandarin) and the Learning Enhancement Program, with music tuition offered in singing, violin, keyboard, brass, drums and guitar and ensembles such as the Performance Choir and Performance Band. Curriculum enrichment programs and lunchtime enrichment clubs are provided, and an on-site Outside School Hours Care program supports families.

Gifted and Talented

Learning Enhancement Program supports advanced learners and a broad range of Curriculum Enrichment programs and lunchtime enrichment clubs provide opportunities to extend learning beyond the core subjects.
Wellbeing

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

The school prioritises the social, emotional and physical wellbeing of students and uses IB PYP attitudes (appreciation, commitment, confidence, cooperation, creativity, curiosity, empathy, enthusiasm, independence, integrity, respect, tolerance and passion) as a framework for daily life. Wellbeing is taught through weekly class sessions on school values and PBL behaviour expectations, timetabled Respectful Relationships lessons, classroom agreements revisited each term, enrichment clubs, whole-school celebration days, circle time, restorative practices and Protective Behaviours. Protective Behaviours, buddy programs across year levels and Year 3 Friends for Life support social and emotional growth. Enrichment clubs provide lunchtime activities such as gardening, debating, meditation, drawing, choir, Beyblades, board games and construction. Peer mediators reinforce school rules and help sort low-level problems in the yard. Positive Behaviour for Learning provides a common language for behaviour and a token-based Positive Acknowledgement system to reinforce positive conduct.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Aspendale Primary School provides an inclusive, safe and respectful environment that values human rights and welcomes all students, regardless of background. Discrimination, harassment and vilification are not tolerated, and the school responds to these behaviours to protect students. The school supports students with disabilities through reasonable adjustments to enable participation in learning on the same basis as peers, in consultation with the student, their families, teachers and, when appropriate, treating practitioners. Support is delivered through Student Support Groups and Individual Learning Plans, with input from families and, where appropriate, external professionals. The school engages with external supports and services to support students with diverse needs and to promote wellbeing and engagement across the full school program.

Mental Wellbeing

Mental wellbeing is supported through the Positive Behaviour for Learning framework and the Respectful Relationships curriculum, ensuring an inclusive and supportive environment. Circle Time and Restorative Practices provide structured opportunities to build confidence, communicate safely and resolve conflicts. Peer mediators reinforce school rules and assist with low-level issues in the yard. Enrichment lunchtime clubs include meditation and other activities that promote wellbeing. Year 3 Friends for Life and other wellbeing initiatives support social and emotional development.

Safeguarding

Aspendale Primary School is a child safe organisation that welcomes all children and families. The school provides a safe environment where participation is valued, views are respected, and voices are heard about decisions affecting students. It has no tolerance for child abuse and proactively identifies and manages risks, with relationships between students and adults based on trust and respect. Particular attention is given to the needs of Aboriginal students, those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, international students, students with disabilities, those unable to live at home and LGBTIQ+ students. Child safety is a shared responsibility and concerns are to be raised promptly; the school regularly reviews child safety practices and policies to inform ongoing improvements.
