Curriculum

English and Mathematics are taught with daily explicit instruction to develop foundational skills. The school combines the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) with the Australian Curriculum to guide learning, focusing on social, emotional and intellectual development in a personalised learning program. A strengths-based approach and an extensive Experiential and Entrepreneurial program prepare students to contribute to a changing world and to make their unique mark.

Higher Education Progression

Optional secondary pathways are offered through partnerships with Pulteney Grammar School, St John's Grammar School and Westminster School. Wellbeing

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

Annesley Junior School supports social and emotional learning through a multi-tiered wellbeing framework. Tier 1 provides whole‑school approaches to promote positive behaviour, mental wellbeing and inclusion; Tier 2 offers targeted intervention; Tier 3 delivers individual support, including Wellbeing Team interventions and behaviour plans. Belonging and active engagement are fostered through day‑to‑day interactions, teaching under the IB Framework and Australian Curriculum, the Child Protection Curriculum, Experiential Learning experiences, and Religion and Values Education (RAVE). The Chaplain is a qualified counsellor available to students, parents and staff, with parental consent required before one‑to‑one counselling, and the Annesley Wellbeing Podcast supports student wellbeing across the community.

Mental Wellbeing

Mental wellbeing is addressed through the school's multi‑tiered wellbeing model (Tier 1 universal supports, Tier 2 targeted interventions, Tier 3 individual support). The Chaplain provides counselling for students, parents and staff, with access coordinated through the school and parental consent for individual sessions. The Annesley Wellbeing Podcast, developed by the Student Wellbeing Committee, gives students a platform to share perspectives and support wellbeing within the community.

Safeguarding

The Student Wellbeing, Behaviour & Engagement Policy commits to a safe, secure and inclusive learning environment with clear expectations for positive behaviour and procedures to support student wellbeing. It recognises that the Australian Curriculum and the IB Primary Years Programme provide comprehensive frameworks that support social and emotional learning, ethical understanding and intercultural competence. Roles and responsibilities involve staff, students, families and the community, with parents as partners in supporting positive behaviour and wellbeing and with processes for documenting and responding to behaviours of concern.
Parent Experience

History

The school began in 1902 as a day and boarding school for girls from Kindergarten to Year 12, and was first known as Methodist Ladies College, consisting of 19 students. In 1904 it moved to Rose Terrace, Wayville, adjacent to Greenhill Road. In 1977 the College was renamed Annesley College following the amalgamation of the Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational Churches. Annesley was named after Susanna Annesley, mother of Methodist Church founder John Wesley. In 2012 Annesley began a new chapter as Annesley Junior School, a co-educational school for students from two years of age through to Year 6.

Community

Annesley Junior School has an active Old Scholars Association (OSA) representing multiple generations of former students from Methodist Ladies College and Annesley College, established in 1905. The OSA organizes reunions and social events, maintains contact with alumni and offers school tours for Old Scholars and coffee mornings with the Principal. Milestone reunions (e.g., 20-year, 40-year, and 50-year reunions) are held, and regional alumni networks such as Victorian Alumni plan social gatherings. The school keeps the community informed through OSA newsletters and events.

Parent Teacher Association (PTA)

The Annesley Parents' Association (APA) provides an invaluable social and support network to all Annesley families. Parent Event Teams fundraise to support nominated projects, providing events, facilities and resources that would not otherwise be available to the school. A planning meeting is held at the beginning of the year to plan key events for the parent community, and Parent Event Teams are gathered for each event to support implementation and create belonging. Class Representatives organize class-level social events, distribute class contact details and facilitate connections; Buddy Families connect new families with existing ones to help them settle into the community. For fundraising and sponsorship opportunities, the APA directs families to the APA Events page and can be contacted via apa@annesley.sa.edu.au.
