Montessori international schools in Switzerland combine Maria Montessori’s child-centred method - mixed-age classrooms, practical materials and long work cycles - with the practicalities of Swiss schooling: many schools operate bilingual programmes (commonly French - English in Romandy and German - English in German-speaking cantons) and some explicitly align parts of their offer with cantonal curricula. Fees vary a great deal depending on location, hours and age; part-time nursery places can be modest but full-day kindergarten and primary programmes in private Montessori schools commonly run into the tens of thousands of Swiss francs a year, with extra charges for registration, meals, transport and after-school care. Admissions usually follow the Swiss academic year (term start in August/September) but many schools use rolling or mid-year entry and ask families to reserve places well in advance, often with an application fee and trial/observation days. Relocating families should check whether a school is recognised by the local canton, what level of Montessori teacher training the staff hold (AMI/AMS or equivalent), the languages used day-to-day, and how the school manages transitions back into local or other international systems.
