Japanese-curriculum schools in Singapore are principally the full-time Japanese School (nihonjin gakkō) for elementary and lower-secondary study and a separate Japanese supplementary (hoshū) programme that runs on weekends for children who attend other schools during the week. Instruction in full-time Japanese schools follows the Japanese national curriculum and is delivered mainly in Japanese, with English and other modern languages taught as subjects; the Saturday supplementary school focuses on kokugo (Japanese language) and cultural subjects. Annual parental costs for Japanese schools are generally much lower than mainstream international schools in Singapore, with recent published examples for overseas Japanese schools in this region commonly in the low thousands to around S$9,000 a year (costs vary by campus, year and one-off enrolment charges). Most intakes and ceremonies follow the Japanese academic calendar with a major intake in April and additional transfer windows or placement testing at other times, so relocating families should plan paperwork (including Student Pass/visa steps for non-Singaporean pupils) and applications several months ahead of arrival.
