The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the UK's statutory framework for children aged 0–5, updated most recently in 2021. It's used by British international nurseries and pre-schools worldwide, and covers seven areas of learning — three "prime" (personal, social & emotional; physical; communication & language) and four "specific" (literacy, maths, understanding the world, expressive arts & design). Provision culminates in the EYFS Profile at the end of Reception (age 5).
The learning pathway
-
Ages 0–3
Prime areas of learning
Personal, social and emotional development; physical development; communication and language. Play-based, adult-led and child-initiated in balance.
-
Ages 3–5
Prime + specific areas
Literacy, maths, understanding the world, and expressive arts & design layered on top of the prime areas. Ends with the EYFS Profile — a baseline against 17 Early Learning Goals.
How EYFS differs from Montessori or Reggio
EYFS is a statutory framework — it sets learning goals and assessment expectations — but it's flexible on pedagogy. Many British international nurseries deliver EYFS with strong Montessori or Reggio-inspired influences. What distinguishes EYFS is the statutory framework and the EYFS Profile snapshot at age 5, not a particular teaching philosophy.
Is EYFS right for your child?
It tends to suit families who…
- •Are planning a British-primary onward pathway
- •Value a statutory framework with clear learning goals
- •Are moving between British international pre-schools
It may be less ideal if…
- •You want a pedagogy-first approach (Montessori, Reggio, Waldorf)
- •The Early Learning Goal assessment at 5 feels heavy for your child

FAQs about the EYFS curriculum
Is EYFS the same as Reception?
Reception is the final year of EYFS (ages 4–5). The wider EYFS framework runs from 0–5, so a British international nursery following EYFS applies it from infancy, not just Reception.
What is the EYFS Profile?
A summary snapshot at the end of Reception recording where a child sits against the 17 Early Learning Goals — "emerging", "expected" or (in previous editions) "exceeding". Used to inform Year 1 teachers, not to grade children in the traditional sense.
