Pearson Edexcel International GCSE is the main alternative to Cambridge IGCSE at British international schools. It's an internationally-adapted version of the UK GCSE, offered by Pearson Edexcel, with UK-aligned syllabuses and grading. Universities treat Edexcel and Cambridge IGCSE as fully equivalent.
The learning pathway
-
Ages 14–16
Two-year Pearson Edexcel IGCSE
Students take a full IGCSE suite (typically 8–10 subjects). Grading is 9–1 across most syllabuses, aligning with UK GCSE reforms.
Why some schools choose Edexcel over Cambridge
Some schools prefer Edexcel because its syllabuses stay closer to UK GCSE content — useful if the school's teachers move between UK and international postings, or if a significant number of students plan to return to UK schooling. In practice, universities do not distinguish between the two boards.
Is Pearson Edexcel IGCSE right for your child?
It tends to suit families who…
- •Are at a school that's standardised on Pearson Edexcel
- •Are likely to return to the UK for sixth form
- •Want syllabuses that hew closely to UK GCSE reform
It may be less ideal if…
- •You want the exact Cambridge grading tradition (A*–G still exists there)
- •You'd prefer a smaller international footprint / staying with the school's other choice

FAQs about the Pearson Edexcel IGCSE curriculum
Are Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel IGCSE treated the same at UK universities?
Yes — equivalent. UCAS and admissions offices treat them identically. Schools normally standardise on one board for teaching-consistency reasons, not because one is stronger.
Is Pearson Edexcel harder or easier than Cambridge?
Neither, on average. Individual subject syllabuses vary in content and exam style; some subjects favour one board slightly. Your child's school's expertise matters more than the board choice.
